I think o2 sensors bad and misfire?

hey yall.. about 4 days ago i bought 2 o2 senors.. both bank 2. replaced them both. went to autozone the next day and ran it. said that one of the senors i put in had low voltage but the other was fine. went out the next day and bought a another sensor for bank 1 sensor 1. ( this was also bad)ok.. went to autozone tonight and it said bank 2 sensor 2 was no activity, bank 1 sensor 2 was no activity and there were 2 other ones that said oxygen sensor circuit was no activity. or something like that.. basic story is that i replaced 2 bad 02 sensors in bank 2. had it checked, 1 of the ones i replaced was good. changed another sensor in another bank.. now they are all screwed.. wtf is going on? any help would be awesome. thanks you all. also, the scanner said i had %26quot; random multiple misfires%26quot; is this all the same problem?
I think o2 sensors bad and misfire?
take it to the dealer to have the pcm programming updated with software for 02 sensor failures and replace the fouled plugs. also may have intake gaskets leaking vacumm
I think o2 sensors bad and misfire?
check main fuses under hood sounds like computer is not getting signal
The o2 sencer get the blame for alot of things that goes wrong with the car. remember those sencers are at the end of all the rest. you need to look a little farthere in to all the sencers the ramdom miss fires could be the coil packs if you have them or the dist. if you don't. Some thing is telling the computer the wrong info. and this is what you got to find. the sencer may still work but giving the wrong info like the engine is cold and it really warmed up so you won't get a code for that.
Fix the multiple missfire code first. Bet it cures all your problems. Just because you have an o2 sensor code don't mean the sensor is bad. Just means it has read rich or lean for too long to suit the computer. the missfire can cause it to read rich because the fuel is not burning in the cylinder and dumping raw fuel in the exhaust. So the 02 sensor reads that as a rich burn and sets the code.

I need an oxygen sensor on my 99 ford ranger xlt. Is it hard to get to or is it inside the manifold?

It's a 4 wheel drive, 4.0 litre, 6 cylinder. If it's easy to change I'll do it myself. If not, I'll take it to a mechanic.
I need an oxygen sensor on my 99 ford ranger xlt. Is it hard to get to or is it inside the manifold?
It depends on which one one. There are FOUR. The only tool you need, is either an O2 sensor socket, or an open end 7/8%26quot; or 22mm size wrench. Hope this helps.
I need an oxygen sensor on my 99 ford ranger xlt. Is it hard to get to or is it inside the manifold?
Well, Rakel is right (like always) but why are you changing the 02 sensor? If it due to an autozone diag, just go throw the money in the street. There are many, many things that can cause a 02 to read wrong, and until it is diagnosed correctly, you might just be wasting $80.00 at a time till you get the correct one replaced, not to mention the skin that will have to grow back. And I would recommend to do it on a cool engine, the pipes can be very unforgiving.

Hope it helps....
pretty much agree with the other two except I own a 2 foot long screw driver so I can depress the o2 sensor locks on the connector if it's ones buried in there... most I use a 7/8 inch wrench with no problems to remove
Take it to a mechanic,4.0 lt engines are not easy to work on,been ther done that.Good luck

Best Check Engine Light Scanner for 1999 Ford Explorer?

I been checking my codes with the Auto Zone OBD scanner and I was told that it does not provide the exact codes for my 1999 Ford Explorer. I had oxygen sensors codes show up when I used the Autozone scanner and I've changed the sensors twice. Would anyone know which Check Engine light scanner is best for my 1999 Ford Explorer? Also, I've only found three sensors under my car two near the engine Bank 1 and bank 2. and the other before the Catalyst converter. I was not able to locate the fourth bank 1 oxygen sensor. can someone tell me where its at?
Best Check Engine Light Scanner for 1999 Ford Explorer?
On a V-6 or V-8 engine youshould only have three O2 sensors. One on each pipe or exhaust manifold coming out of the engine and one after the catalytic convertor.

Most O2 sensors will outlast an enigne or go 100K-200K miles. There are many things that can give a false reading to make it read an O2 sensor.

If you do not stay on top of oil changes or tune ups or there is significant oil usage from wear and tear these mechanical and chemical changes (dirty nasty oil) will give false O2 sensor readings.

Best ot have a full engine diagnostic to get the whole picture before spending anymore money on parts you don't need.

Good Luck!

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

Where is the Oxygen Sensor on a 1995 Buick Skylark GS?

After 104,000 miles, my %26quot;Service Engine Soon%26quot; light is coming on intermittantly and I suspect it's the oxygen sensor which has never been replaced. If I can change this myself, I will. I'm having a problem finding it though. This car has a 3.1 V-6. Thanks.

i mechanic for a living,,and it sort of towards the back on this one ,its not out in plain site like most of them,,you can do better ,getting this one from the bottom of the car,,if you get in under it you,ll see it, it mounts right before the header pipe connects to the cat,on it,,be sure and soak it with with some wd-40 this will help bring it out, good luck, hope this help,s
Where is the Oxygen Sensor on a 1995 Buick Skylark GS?
Usually between the engine and catalytic convertor.
just beneath the headlights to the right of the do-hickey thingy and kitty korner from the widgity whatsamacallit.
On any engine the oxygen sensor or sensors are always on the exhaust between the manifold and the cat converter. You have a V6 so you're gonna have two of them. They're easy to spot because they look kinda like a spark plug only with a regular looking wire coming off of it. Dodge Man is right though. Soak them with a penetrant to loosen them.
It's most likely on one side of the engine exhaust manifolds. It might be covered with a heat shield. Or if not, it probably would then be towards the center of the exhaust system further down from the engine under the car screwed into the exhaust pipe.

But I would have the engine codes read first to determine what the computer is saying the problem is. Remember that the computer uses the o2 sensor to detect problems, so if the computer indicates that the o2 sensor is detecting a lean or rich condition it's probably another part on the car that would be making the exhaust not meet the requirements of the emission control system. (most auto parts sales people like to sell o2 sensors to people who know nothing about the car because it's easy to convince you that you need one, and for 50 or more dollars it might be worth looking further into the problem)

  • Oxygen sensor for a 98-99 toyota avalon?

I have a 99 toyota avalon and the check engine light just came on, I have no idea what is wrong, but the engine is fine. My friends told me that it might be my oxygen sensor. I read on some sights that my car has 2 sensors. I am kind of low on cash and I just want to change the one that is broken, how do I test it and where is this stupid sensor. Do shops tests check engine lights for free, since I might be doing that, also is it hard to fix?
Oxygen sensor for a 98-99 toyota avalon?
    Hello and good question...

First off you will need to find out what the actual codes are that turned on the Check Engine Light. No point in waisting time and money fixing things that you or your friend might think is the problem.

All Check Engine Lights come on for multiple reasons and you will need to figure out WHY it came on. By having the codes you are narrowing down the location of the problem, so that you can use correct judgment and diagnostics to correct it with lower cost to you.

Go to your local auto parts store barrow their Code Scanner - now you will get a code or codes that lead you to the direction of the problem BUT may still not be the right solution.

Once you get the codes and you have an idea where to start your diagnostics , you will still need perhaps tools to do this.

I for one would do this, since you are not able to correct the problem without tools and/or/ scanner - I would go to the Dealer have them run diagnostics , get the info they give you fix the problem yourself. This way you have correct information on why the light is coming on and they have done all the diagnostics for you. You will pay something for this diagnostics but you can be sure that you will get the problem fixed.

    Good Luck
Oxygen sensor for a 98-99 toyota avalon?
Don't go guessing %26amp; replacing parts your car may not need. See if there is an auto-zone or pep-boys shop around, usually they will pull the code(s) from your computer for free, with the thought that they can sell you the part right then and there. However do not buy the part just because there is a code stored for it, there may be a wiring issue causing the code. There a probably about 160 different items that can make your check engine light come on, even a loose or missing gas cap will do that. Have the code pulled, go to alldata-diy.com, you can buy a subscription to all the technical data for your vehicle there so that you can acess the manufacuturers test for the specific code and/or a possbile service bulliten issued from the factory relating to your problem. It will also contain the nec. repair info once you determine the cause of failure.I think the subscription will run you about $ 25.00 for the year. Good Luck!
Before you do anything, take the car out and put the petal to the metal. I mean really floor it getting onto the freeway. Many times an O2 sensor will show bad because of carbon build-up. Most people occasionally put the petal to the metal a few times during the year, but with gas prices being high I have seen a lot more of these because people just don't run the car hard enough or often enough to keep it clean.

If this works for you be sure to give me best answer because I'll never get it in the voting!

Is air fuel sensor oxygen sensor?

we changed the primary oxygen sensor for Honda accord LX 2000, and the engine light came one again, this time the error code read%26quot; air fuel sensor%26quot; is this air fuel sensor the secondary oxygen sensor by the catalyst converter?
Is air fuel sensor oxygen sensor?
the air/fuel sensor can also be referred to as the oxygen sensor.

the LX 2000 has 2 opxygen sensors.

one is before the catalytic converter and the other is after.

a code scanner would narrow down which one is acting up.

However, replacing both is usually a good rule of thumb.

OR.. you have another problem, like maybe a broken vacuum line, which is allowing air into the system without the computer's knowledge and that could be affecting the o2 sensor's readings.
Is air fuel sensor oxygen sensor?
With a four cylinder engine, the code definition should have read: B1S1 (for the upstream sensor responsible for fuel/air ratio monitoring) or B1S2 (for the sensor downstream of the catalytic converter, which only monitors that part). If you changed the front (S1) sensor and you still have a code for it, save your old sensor as there may be nothing wrong with it. If the code is for the O2 sensor heater, check your fuses. If not, the code is probably a symptom of another problem, such as a misfire, restricted fuel filter or intake air leak. Is this the same code you got previously? Did you install a direct-fit replacement or a universal sensor that had to be configured for your honda's wiring connector?
    May help you a little
there's should be two of them before and after the catalyst converter

Where is the Oxygen Sensor located in 97 Honda Accord?

The Check engine light came on and we had it checked out and they guy said we need to replace the o2 sensor..We have a 97 honda accord. Where would the sensor be located on my car and how do we change them? Is it something simple we can do or do we have to take it to the shop?
Where is the Oxygen Sensor located in 97 Honda Accord?
There are two (on 4 cyl) - one before, and one after catalytic converter. You need a special socket to replace it but first I suggest you determine which one is bad by checking the code number.

Oh, those parts store guys that tell you that an O2 sensor is bad but don't mention that there are more than one. Don't get me started!

How do you change the bank one oxygen sensor for a 98 dodge grand caravan 3.0L v6 and after clear the codes?

First you will need a 7/8th inch wrench ( I cannot remember the metric size of them off hand) or an O2 sensor socket and appropriate ratchet.

Bank one will be the left side of the motor which in your case would be the FRONT bank of the engine as it sits in the vehicle. Usually the O2 sensors are mounted close to/or in the exhaust manifolds, so crawl under the car, and follow the front exhaust pipe from the front exhaust manifold back towards the catalytic converter. You should see it somewhere near where the pipe bolts to the manifold (looks almost like a sparkplug).

Once located, Unpug the connector, compare the old and new/replacement sensor connector to make sure you bought the right replacement, use the wrench/socket and unscrew (not always easy) the old one. Install the new sensor. It does not need to be cranked in there for oblivion, just a little tighter than %26quot;snug%26quot;, reconnect the connector and route/tie the wires where they wont interfere, hang down, drag or burn on the exhaust.

Use a scanner to clear the EDC.

If I have the correct scanner, I usually run the car and observe/verify that the new sensor is working properly before clearing the code and sending it home. If you can't, just clear the code.

    All done

Sometimes the sensors are hard to loosen. I usually try to do it when the exhaust is still hot, they come out easier. But this also means that I get burned sometimes.

What is the problem with my 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS ? Is it Minor or Major?

The car starts without a problem and runs very well. It doesn't lope or miss and when you give it gas it responds wonderfully. It has the North-star engine in it. The problem is it sends out very heavy white smoke out of the exhaust. We changed the Oxygen sensor and this didn't help at all. My guess is the computer. But again, is this a cheap fix or a major expense??
What is the problem with my 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS ? Is it Minor or Major?
White smoke is coolant getting burnt. You most likely have a bad head gasket. Check the oil and make sure it is not foamy.
What is the problem with my 1994 Cadillac Seville SLS ? Is it Minor or Major?
Sounds like you might have a major problem. Most usually when you have a white smoke from exhaust it is a tell tell sign of a blown head gasket.have a mechanic pressure test the cooling system.

You got way over charged. You could have other problems.Spark plugs, fuelinjec, map sensor, ext. If you have a auto zone thy will do a free diagnostic test for you buy the part and have a reputable mechanic to change it for you. The people at auto zone can give you a mechanics name are tell you how to do.you might give it a try you will be surprised how easy some of that stuff can be. most of the time it wont hurt your car but can cut your gas miles in half.
    Car warning light-oxygen sensor?
First you need to know what the code is.

Then you can tell if there is anything you can do with the shop? If it comes back as an O2 sensor, you may be able to take him to small claims court, for your costs.

BUT, also, you may have two O2 sensors, each one will have a code.

PLUS, it can be any number of things.

I bought our OBDII reader for 150.00 and it tells me what I need to know.

Go to AutoZone and get a code book for your model.
Since you replaces the oxygen sensor recently, the problem is probably not with the sensor, but it's probably in the computer. In many cars, like the Toyota, only the dealership service, has the key and code to turn off the oxygen sensor warning light. Ask the dealership how much it will cost, to turn off the light, if the sensor is brand new.
When you get a check engine light, a computer (usually at the mechanics shop OR at the State Inspection center, will tell you what the code is; it'll look like this %26quot;F0171%26quot; or f1130 .... something like that. Go on the internet and look up %26quot;Diagnostic codes for Camaro, or Charger, or Mustang%26quot; you'll find a site that lists the codes and what they mean; Sometimes a code can mean several different things, If your mechanic just looked at one of the possibilities then he was a bit lax... When you get a code you have to check out all the things that might me causing the code (He will know what those things are because the computer will tell him what to check)...

The wiring has broken off my oxygen sensor on my fto inside the car. Where do they connect to?

I changed the front pipe and it dropped, pulling the wires through the floor. There are four wires. Inside the tunnel where they have detached from there are many many other connectors. Please help it will not start without it and I need the car for work.
The wiring has broken off my oxygen sensor on my fto inside the car. Where do they connect to?
Buy connectors and put the wires back together--match the color...Disconnect the battery... Make arrangements for a ride if you figure that you done enough repairs and let the pros wire the car. Yep--tow truck and off to the shop...
The wiring has broken off my oxygen sensor on my fto inside the car. Where do they connect to?
You don't say what kind of car it is but generally those type of connectors are indexed so that they can't plug into the wrong connector. By indexed I mean there will be grooves inside the mating connector that will have to match the connector they are unplugged from. And also I don't think an oxygen sensor should keep the car from starting if it is unhooked,it will turn the 'check engine' light on quickly but usually it will not keep the car from starting so it might be something else.

Does anyone know why my 2000 Jeep Wrangler's Check Engine Light is on, but then turns off if the temp changes?

It has been on for a while, but then goes off for a while after a good rain or after the temp warms up a little bit. I checked the diagnostic code and it said it was an oxygen sensor, I changed the sensor but the problem remains. Please don't answer unless you've seen this before and know how to fix it.
Does anyone know why my 2000 Jeep Wrangler's Check Engine Light is on, but then turns off if the temp changes?
alot of times there are more than one o2 sensor on ur car replace the others.
Does anyone know why my 2000 Jeep Wrangler's Check Engine Light is on, but then turns off if the temp changes?
I would go to a local autozone or auto parts store that does the diagnostic free. Do a visual isnspection of those littlle hoses around the top of the engine to see if any are corroded. It may be a bad sensor or hose.

Can a damaged oxygen sensor ruin catalytic converter?

My 04 lancer has P0421 (warm up catalyst efficienty below threshold bank 1). Should I just change the catalytic converter because I notice the fuel efficiency of my car is really low? But if the problem is the oxygen sensor, is it gonna ruin my new cat. then? I went to a shop and they told me it costs like 140 just to find out what part is wrong so I dont know what to do. What would be the best way to solve this problem with the minimum amount of money?
Can a damaged oxygen sensor ruin catalytic converter?
%26gt;%26gt; they told me it costs like 140 just to find out what part is wrong so

Yea... strange shops don't want to work for free.

    ====

There are 2 sensors that will make the car use much more gas

    (1) bad o2 sensor

    (2) bad water temp sensor.

But given you got P0421 it is probably bad o2 sensor.

    ===

Bad o2 sensor will make your car dump fuel into the piston (making it run rich and bad mpg). That extra fuel has to be finished burning in the cat converter (eventually melting it down).

    Good Luck....
Can a damaged oxygen sensor ruin catalytic converter?
You need a new o2 sensor asap, not having it function correctly means you are running rich (wasting gas) Just the sensor should do the trick if you havnt been driving around like this for too long. Running rich is basically overloading the cat, causing it to fail early.
a really rich fuel mixture will ruin a cat. you might wanna find another shop...ask your neighbors where they take they're cars..

    Good luck!

Where is the oxygen sensor located on a 2002 Landrover Freelander?

Mechanic pulled code for a faulty oxygen sensor with engine light on. He wrote down Oxygen Sensor 15 184 (does that mean anything?) I understand that there are four sensors. He recommended changing two in the back? Would these be on the exhaust or on the engine? I assume that this is probably easy to do, so I would like to save some $$ and do it myself.
Where is the oxygen sensor located on a 2002 Landrover Freelander?
The 2 in the back are easy to find. Get under the truck starting at the muffler follow the exhaust towards the engine. The first one should be behind the cat and the other in front. You better have really good tools to take them out. Min 6 point good quality wrench or rent the proper socket. have fun saving money.

Could somboby tell me, light comess on instrument panel, Diagnistic check reveals oxigen sensor, saying A.F problem..Now i would have thought that rectify the air low and problem solved.. but no says the so called car mechanic , change the Lambda sensor, surly sensors are there to tell you whats wrong and to put it right, not change the sensor, This Vehicle as only done 40,000 miles... Its easy for the garage to turn the panel light off, makes as if they have done a good job,,,,So will somebody confirm that its likely to be the air flow rather than lambda sensor..
    Oxygen sensor re any car?
O2 Sensor? Probably NOT the problem.

People like to blame the O2 sensor for the problem because that's where the computer fault appears.

However, nine times out of ten, it's not faulty. It is simply reading a condition in the engine that is causing it to send a signal to the computer that there is a fault in the exhaust emissions mixture.

A fouled spark plug, loose spark plug wire, a vacuum leak, dirty injectors, EGR valve, weak fuel pump, dirty fuel filter, weak ignition coil, plugged air filter, on and on, can all cause the O2 sensor to register a fault code.

Before you yank the O2 sensor and replace it, check the basics first. Otherwise, you could have wasted time and money on the result, not the cause.

    (Check Engine Light)

There are many components that work together in the engine to maintain optimal engine performance and economy.

A %26quot;check engine%26quot; light indicates that there is a sensor that is reading a condition that is %26quot;out of range%26quot;.

Simply resetting the light does not solve the initial cause of the problem.

Replacing a number of parts trying to troubleshoot the problem in the hopes of getting the light to stay off is a tremendous waste of time and money.

The simplest, and most economical way to alleviate your issue, is to have an engine diagnostic done by a reputable shop to determine what caused the computer to signal you to begin with. Just reading the computer codes may not find the %26quot;cause%26quot;.

I have a rubbing sound when i turn my tires and the steering wheel shakes when i brake. what could cause this?

i recently replaced the shocks, front brakes, front right ball joint, the serpentine belt, had a tune up and changed the oxygen sensor. I had an alignment and tire balance done and this stopped the rubbing sound for awhile. but it's now back, along with a groaning sound. can anyone help?
I have a rubbing sound when i turn my tires and the steering wheel shakes when i brake. what could cause this?
It might just be slack wheel nuts, sometimes the simple thing are missed. Although the shocks were replaced how about the springs? Try jacking up the front and spinning the wheel to check if the brakes are binding, these suggestions might help but keep on trying I have no training in auto repairs but the only time my car goes into a garage is for the annual road safety check which is a government requirement.
I have a rubbing sound when i turn my tires and the steering wheel shakes when i brake. what could cause this?
I think this same thing happened to my car when I had to replace the ball joint but I am by no means a professional!!
Time for a brake recheck. If the steering wheel shakes when you brake, the front brake discs are slightly warped (when the brake pads grab the discs, the whole assembly shimmys back and forth because of the warp - this gets felt as a slight right-left motion in your steering wheel). If this problem existed in the back wheels, you would feel a something like a slow-fast-slow stopping motion. If your front brakes are 'groaning', that's a sign of too much metallic material in the pads and is common in aftermarket pads. You can either wait a while and see if it eventually goes away, complain about the noise to your mechanic, and/or have him put in OEM (original equipment) pads (which cost 2x more). Aren't cars great? Good luck!

    Can I change a 1-wire sensor with a 2-wire?

I have a 1993 Geo Prizm and I need to change the oxygen sensor. I bought one online only to find out that it's a two-wire sensor, which is a problem because the sensor that came off of it is one-wire. Is there any way I can splice one of the wires to the connector of the original sensor, or does the thing need both wires to function properly?
    Can I change a 1-wire sensor with a 2-wire?
connect one wire to ground but away from heat source,

the defective sensor with one sensor is connected to ground internally or through the thread..

the new one with 2 wire is also connected to ground but through the harness.

what you got is heated O2 sensor, the new one with 2 wires.

    http://mr2.com/TEXT/O2_Sensor.html
    Can I change a 1-wire sensor with a 2-wire?
You cannot splice the wires becuase they have different jobs (each wire has a specific task) and that will destroy your oxygen sensor. Go to a auto dismantler to get one for cheap. or a store.

  • How difficult to replace a oxygen sensor?

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, with V-8 engine (California emissions).

I believe the O2 sensor is on the exhaust manifold. Can I change this out without having to lift the car off the ground? How difficult is this job? Thank you

How difficult to replace a oxygen sensor?
It's probably tall enough that you can reach it from under without lifting, depending if it's even accessible. There are more than likely two, one on each manifold (after where the four tubes meet into one larger). Depending on age and whether or not it was anti-seized on the install, it can be a GIANT pain to get them out. Since you're replacing, don't waste money on a special socket that lets you keep the wire intact. My advice is to destroy the outer case of the sensor so you can get a normal socket on the nut portion. Don't try with an open-end wrench, you'll just round the crap out of it. Try initial removal with hot exhaust. No luck? Try it cold (ambient temp). Still not budging? Use a large propane canister and heat the crap out of it, then quickly try to remove. Super-heating the threads helps break the strong bonds they've developed in twenty years of hanging out in the manifold. I had an old fiat that was so bonded it actually tore out the bung instead of loosening at the threads. Anyway, good luck, and use a breaker bar and six point socket.
How difficult to replace a oxygen sensor?
It is very easy to do, it will take a 7/8 open wrench, on some vehicle it will take a 1/2 inch wrench. The oxygen sensor is located on the exhause before and after the cat converter. Use some antiseze when installing it on the threads and besure to disconnect the neg post on the battery, God Bless,
i have same vicle and had 2 replace my oxygen sensor 2.

not difficult let vehicle cool of do not have 2 jack up however there may b 2

1 in front of catalytic converter 1 behind disconnect battery first very important

disconnect oxygen sensor wire connection then take wrench an turn it off it is on exhaust under vehicle

I have a 1999 chevy cavalier with a bad oxygen sensor. How hard is it to change and which one do i get.......

because ive seen ones that say 4 wire, direct fit, and they look different too. thanks guys!!!!!!!
I have a 1999 chevy cavalier with a bad oxygen sensor. How hard is it to change and which one do i get.......
For one how do you know its bad? Have you run a systems Diagnostic ? you seen the wave form being bad under certain test procedures? Dont just assume its bad because the light is on.

You will need to get the correct O2 sensor per your vehicle, YES they do make a variety of installable sensors but get the right one for your vehicle and for the most part since your car is a 99 its OBD II governed and you will need the 4 wire Sensor, YES you can do it yourself but that vehicle has i think 2 sensors - hence you will need to figure out which one is bad IF it even is bad.

Best advise i can give you at this time without knowing what is going on with your vehicle.

    Good Luck
I have a 1999 chevy cavalier with a bad oxygen sensor. How hard is it to change and which one do i get.......
you need an o2 socket it looks like a regular socket with one side cut out and you change it just like a spark plug. go to an auto parts store tell them what car you have and Eng and they will give you the right part.
first off...how do you know it's the oxygen sensor? If it is...then get the VIN # and go to the parts store and they can get you the right one.

One thing I have done is remove the old one and clean it with carb cleaner...this does work.
Get a diagonstic tester, plug it up underneath the dash of your car, it will tell you which O2 sensor is bad. The front one or the back one. Get sensor by-( Wells Co. Products) at Auto Zone. They will tell you which one you need. My husbands works there.
get the code from your computer..that will tell you which one...there should be one right in the front of the engine..

to the ATS light..is it just the ats light..or is the dash lighting up..these lights coming on are early signs of a wheel bearing problem on a GM..If the ABS light it could cause you a problem in a dangerous situation since that means the ABS is not working and the brakes will lock up..so yes it is important to look into!!!!!
this car has two o2 sensors, really not that hard to replace. one is located before the cat converter and one behind the converter. should be able to get at both with a 7/8ths wrench. you may need to cut the wires on the old sensors and use the box end of the wrench.
Oxygen sensors look like spark plugs and screw into the exhaust manifold and/or exhaust headpipe. They should be changed at least every 60,000 miles. They carbon up and go %26quot;blind%26quot; (failing to sense oxygen levels in the exhaust) over time. This will cause poor air/fuel ratios and poor performance as well as hurting gas mileage and possibly even overheating the catalytic converter. The old 1-wire GM sensors run around $30,but multi wire Heated sensors can cost up to $200.I would stick with a name brand like AC Delco,Denso,or Bosch and also buy one of those sensor sockets that look like a regular socket with a slice down the side (for the wires to exit),they are pretty cheap especially if you can find one in the %26quot;Performance Tool%26quot; brand (aka Chinese made).
some of these are NOT cheap when you get into 4 or 6 wire configs they can be expensive. also do not spray cleaners on it it will ruin it if it is not the bad one.

My service engine soon light is on, what can be wrong, saturn Vue 2003?

I did the gas cap n fuel steps, I scanned it n changed an oxygen sensor, the light remains on and the scanner reads it is off, and does not have enough data available. The battery was also disconnected originally to reset the light. The car is running rough
My service engine soon light is on, what can be wrong, saturn Vue 2003?
I cannot find a comprehensive list right now. Thought I knew right where it was

Muffler, gas cap evaporation system, coolant temp, oil temp, pressure in the fuel injectors, lots of stuff.

If you go to a place where they have the electronic diagnostic machines, they can tell you the message and exactly what is causing the light to come on.

Running rough? Bet it's fuel injectors.

take it to a gmc dealer or auto part store to hooked up to the computer find out what wrong
Have you had the engine computer code read? Most National Auto Parts stores will have the hand held computer thingie that hooks into your on-board computer, to tell you what error code comes up. Then they can cross referance the code, and that will help you get started getting some answers. Around here, Advanced Auto Parts, AutoZone, NAPA, employees will check your on-board computer for error code.
The %26quot;Service Engine Soon%26quot; light is ONLY A REMINDER that a recommended routine maintenance is needed. When you get your engine serviced, ask the mechanic to reset the light for you.

The %26quot;Check Engine Soon%26quot; light means THERE IS A PROBLEM with either engine performance and/or emission controls and should be repaired ASAP
the light will stay on until it is reset by an authorized technician

My 97' Dodge Intrepid dies when I hit the brakes?

I started to drive and it seemed like my trans slipped, it vibrated and jumped a little bit, it cleared off but then as soon as i hit my brakes the car died. The car starts and drives, but when you hit the brakes it dies out. The check engine light is on, I got my oxygen sensor changed a few months back, what could it be?
My 97' Dodge Intrepid dies when I hit the brakes?
Believe it or not, the check engine light means the computer has detected a fault. Since the car has OBDII, the codes will tell you what's wrong., so get the codes read.
My 97' Dodge Intrepid dies when I hit the brakes?
Well first check your oil cause it might be your engine locking up and if you are the type of person who runs your car on fumes before you fill back up you should stop because that is incredibly hard on the engine and transmission. other then that you would be best off having a mechanic check it out real fast.
Have the code read and save yourself some grief. If I had to guess, your power brake booster is leaking, causing a vacuum leak (too much air) at the engine. The power brakes are run by engine vacuum, and if the booster is leaking it causes the engine to suck in way too much air and confuses the system. Just a possibility.

BMW E36- Drop in fuel economy?

Fuel economy dropped from 22 in city to 14 over period of several months. Currently has 177K. Plan on changing oxygen sensors. Any other suggestions. Thanks.
BMW E36- Drop in fuel economy?
Unless you have an check engine light, changing the O2 sensors will be a waste of time. The engine may have a deeper internal problem with compression considering the mileage on it. Your dumping in more fuel to get the same power as it did when it was new. To me, I'd consider a bigger issue. Compression.
BMW E36- Drop in fuel economy?
    Try the water temp sensor.

It senses if your engine warmed up. While the computer thinks the engine is cold, it will run then engine RICH (poor fuel economy). I answer lots of questions here, and lately more and more people are reporting poor economy (and the weather is turning cold). Hmmmmm....

The thing about water temp sensor is that a failed sensor often does NOT turn on the check engine light. The only nice thing about failed check engine light is that it is fairly easy and cheap to replacel

Can I replace the oxygen sensor on my '95 Ford Ranger?

How hard is it to replace? Like changing a spark plug or replacing the transmission? Does it require special tools? How often should it be replaced anyway?
Can I replace the oxygen sensor on my '95 Ford Ranger?
Yes you can change them! It is a real pain in the butt! At least it was on my '97 F-150! I would suggest you look in a repair manual and see if you need to get any special tools! I would not do it again, I'd just go to a repair shop!
Can I replace the oxygen sensor on my '95 Ford Ranger?
really easy similar to a spark plug but easier to get at. there are either 2 or 4 sensors and run around $100.00 each. Chilton is the maker of do it yourself auto service manuals. Good Luck
O2 sensors are pretty easy to change. Just like taking out a spark plug, You may want the socket to take it out, it a special socket, it has a slot cut out of the side to allow the O2 sensor wire to get out of the way. If the sensor doesn't want to move just let the truck warm up for about 5min or so the start to to spin it out. You should change about every 60-80k miles. You should have 2 oxygen sensors. Upstream by the block and one down stream by the catalytic converter.
it is basically like replacing a spark plug almost, and there is a special socket used for doing this, but if you have a good enough space to work in,a boxed in wrench will remove and install a new one,its not a hard job at all on the old one you don't have to worry about breaking the top off of it,but be really careful on the new one,one wrong slip, and it will break, and that's a lot of money down the drain,be sure and also use a little penetrating oil on it to help loosen it up,i believe you can do it,its not that hard to do,and once you learn how there will be other things you can do also, this is considered to be about a 2 on scale of 1-10,you,ll have to have it scanned and have the trouble code removed from it once the new one is on,but auto zone will do that for free, good luck on it,hope this helps.
Even the ones that are hard to get to can be gotten to. I've never had to use anything other than a standard wrench or adjustable wrench. You just have to be smarted than the O2 sensor and take it slow and easy. Most will twist out by hand once you got a couple turns on them.

Generally, if you don't have any idle problems or trouble lights on the dash, once every hundred thousand miles is a good standard. I had one on my Caddy for 131,000 before I decided to throw a new one on it and I twisted it off with my fingers since the pressure (crush) %26quot;washer%26quot; had long since rusted away.
If they are not stuck, then you should be able to change then with out trouble. I have found the connector to be the hardest to do on Rangers. I think you have a V6 engine and you should have a total of 3 sensors. 2 before the Cat. and 1 after the Cat.

If you are doing this because of a code, get it diagnosed first. There are many things that can set an O2 sensor code of witch there are many.

If I clear my check engine light because of a oxygen sensor error, and it doesnt come back on, can i pass?

the emissions test without actually getting another oxygen sensor? thats what happened today, i changed my front o2 sensor and the light has gone off but the mechanic tells me that my oxygen sensor for the rear is bad too and i want to know if it will pass emissions if the check engine light is not on
If I clear my check engine light because of a oxygen sensor error, and it doesnt come back on, can i pass?
if the O2 sensor is bad, the light will come on,,,

it doesn't matter if its rear or front it is still connected to your ECM and it will give a code if its bad...

you can't tell if it will pass or fail an emission without taking to a smog center...

    take it there,,

    have them test it,,

if it fail then it fail,

they will give you a free retest anyways...
If I clear my check engine light because of a oxygen sensor error, and it doesnt come back on, can i pass?
I would assume so. I don't think most places would go that extra mile to find out if everything is working if the light is not on. Is it really bad? Or is that mechanic just wanting more money? You can usually tell when your sensors are bad.
if your REAR o2 sensor is bad.. all it does it check the exhaust coming out to make sure your exhaust is doing its job. so you're emissions are still getting %26quot;filtered%26quot; if everything is still working on that part.
    Quite possibly,yes.

How do i change out a oxygen sensor on my 99' dakota?

is easier to cut the wires at the sensor on the old one and use a wrench on it to get it out, then on the new one be really careful installing it,because they will break, and if you break it they wont warranty it,use a little wd-40 to help loosen it up some and it should come right out, take your time though the one thing you don't want to happen is it break off and you have to remove a pipe or something to get the old part out, good luck.

do u know more or less how to do it? they rent sockets for em at autozone. that or a 7/8 wrench
How do i change out a oxygen sensor on my 99' dakota?
Since you don't say what engine transmission you have, I'll tell you about changing out the sensor on my '92 3.9 AT Dakota 4x4. And I think my wife's '97 3.9 AT Dakota 4x4 has it in the same location. I am fortunate enough to have a pit to work in (and a lift if I need it).

Mine is in the exhaust pipe upstream of the catalytic convertor, gently pull the wires toward the sensor, unplug the sensor, use open end wrench or line wrench to unscrew sensor and remove, carefully screw new sensor into position and plug in to connector.

Like I said I worked in a pit and it took all of three minutes to change out, not kidding about time, if you're working on the ground it could take a bit longer. Mine was not corroded at the bung and came out quite easily. I can't say if yours will be that easy. Good luck.

put wrench on O2 sensor. Turn counter clockwise. Repeat until sensor is out.

I would check the mass air flow sensor and the throttle position sensor. The throttle position sensors are know to fail especially this old. The mass air flow sensor can cause the same issues. If you are not the original owner even check that it is not installed backwards, there is an arrow on the sensor pointing which way it should be installed.

Can an oxygen sensor be rigged to malfunction?

just took a used car in for its first oil change. the car is in good shape, and I have never had any indicator lights on. on my way home from the oil change, the engine malfunction light came on. according to the same place, it is the oxygen sensor. can this be rigged to go off so I spend more money? I don't intend on accusing them of anything, but kind of weary going back.
Can an oxygen sensor be rigged to malfunction?
Honestly Ryan it would be very difficult for them to do. The only thing that I can think of is they disconnected the wire connector going to the O2 sensor wire just enough that it does not make contact. So you might want to get under your vehicle and check that. If it is secure then just strike it up to Murphy's law unfortunately.

The O2 sensor count the amount of oxygen in your exhaust compared to hydrocarbons and your computer adjusts your engine accordingly to this measurement. If it is not measuring, as in the wire was disconnected, the computer is asking WTF? at that point and throwing a code.
Can an oxygen sensor be rigged to malfunction?
yes it can be unplugged causing the light to go on, or it has just failed which can happen. take it to another shop and ask them about it
If they cut the wire. Not likely though, coincident I'll say. Bring it to another shop.
It is as simple as unplugging it or even loosening the plug so it doesn't make good contact. It is almost possible this could have happened accidentally while changing the oil. I doubt it. I would get under the car and check the sensor plug. It is pretty easy to find (look for wires sticking out of the exhaust pipe near the engine). Check the wires for rub spots from the sensor to the plug and make sure the plug is together tight. If all that is good I guess the sensor just went bad and it was coincidence

Check engine light autozone said error code P0133 Saturn 2004 ION 2?

Many times check engine light comes on and we took it to autozone and they said error code P0133 and probable causes are 1.Oxygen sensor defective 2.fuel system running rich or lean-check other codes first.

    What does this mean?

    What should we do?

Should we change oxygen sensor? if yes what is the cost effective place to buy it?

What about the other probable reason?

what should we do about fuel system?
Check engine light autozone said error code P0133 Saturn 2004 ION 2?
P0133 is a slow responding O2 sensor.....O2 sensors have a life expectancy of 100K miles depending on driving habits and other conditons....This code is due to a O2 sensor failing....I would change the O2 and doing and a fuel injector service and or tune up if need be would not hurt if the car has not had a complete tune-up......but ultimately the O2 should be changed because the code is for a failing O2 not a vacuum leak or fuel system issue....although both can cause an O2 to prematurely fail...... I would get an A/C delco or a bosch O2 sensor not a universal O2......the cheap universal O2 sensor are not good and will not last....spend the extra money and get a quality O2 or you'll be buying another cheap one in 6 months if you don't......pay now or pay later....;)
Check engine light autozone said error code P0133 Saturn 2004 ION 2?
This code is telling you that your car is running to lean/rich. This could be caused by a false reading from the o2 sensor meaning it is bad or it could be a bad catalytic converter. It also mentions the fuel system because it could be caused by a bad injector or fuel filter. Given the year of your car im going to lean towards a bad 02 sensor or bad fuel filter. Filter is a couple bucks so i would try that first. If nothing i would try the 02 sensor. Remember that when you change something you either need to have the codes cleared or you need to pull off the battery for 10 minutes to reset the check engine light. Best price is probably going to be at autozone or ebay.
Slow oxygen sensor response is typical when oxygen sensors get old. I'd go with a new O2 sensor on this one. But you can double check the waveforms with a scan tool to be sure.

The O2 sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. If there is too much in the exhaust, the car is running too lean. If there's no oxygen in the exhaust, the car is running too rich.

You can get the O2 sensor at an auto parts store.

I wouldn't do anything to the fuel system with this code.
    Check for vacuum leak first.

  • How do I change a Oxygen Sensor? (02 Eclipse)?

Yesterday my S.E.S light turned on, got two opinions on it. One said o2 sensor the other said exhaust sensor (I under stand thats the same thing, ppl just got different names) so I'm looking to go get a new sensor from a Mitsubishi dealer tomorrow and replacing the old one myself...I understand I need to unclip the wires and pull out the probe(?) part and then just put in the new one but is there anything complicated I should expect? or anything I should now? instructions would be nice lol (thx for any help!)
How do I change a Oxygen Sensor? (02 Eclipse)?
I recently replaced the oxygen sensor on an 11 year old Nissan pickup. I expected it to be %26quot;welded%26quot; in place, but it came out with no problem. You don't need to get the sensor at a dealer. Also, don't cut the wires! Get an O2 sensor socket at any auto parts store (they aren't that expensive, pick one up when you get the sensor) or borrow one from a friend. They're like a spark plug socket, but with a slot on one side to fit around the wires.
How do I change a Oxygen Sensor? (02 Eclipse)?
    The main thing is which O2 sensor are you replacing. There maybe as many as 4 of them on your car. You right about the way to change it and should have no problem as long as the sensor is not rusted in place%26gt;
First, dont get the new one from the dealer. They just charge way too much. Second, when replacing the O2 sensor be careful of impending rust. It could rust itself into place and be the biggest pain to get. Also keep in mind that you will need a special socket to get that thing out. Or cut the old wire off and use a box end wrench. But rust is the biggest deal with those so have fun.
I'm curious what you mean by %26quot;opinions.%26quot; Were they the opinions of mechanics, or of the most convenient guys with code readers? I'm also curious as to what code(s) set to begin with. Often a code for a catalyst inefficiency is dismissed as a bad O2 sensor, when just as often, it's an exhaust leak. These guys are right about frozen sensors though. I don't think it's the rust as much as heat fluctuation, which is more of a problem for sensors mounted directly into the manifolds. Generally, if it's going to come out, it should break free and spin fairly easily. If you're struggling with it for more than a quarter-turn or so, you probably have a problem on your hands.

    Question about oxygen sensors?

How difficult are they to change out in a 96 mustang GT? I know I need the special socket for them and some break free. Would some anti seize compound be a good Idea?
    Question about oxygen sensors?
7/8 wrench is all you need. Yes put anti-seize on the threads.

Will a bad o2 sensor make you fail a smog check and cause the engine light to come on periodically?

I have failed this last smog test and have verified that my egr valve is fine. The check engine light comes on sporadically and when it does the engine runs a little rough, especially when it is just idling. Wondering if I should change the oxygen sensor, and hoping that there is only one.
Will a bad o2 sensor make you fail a smog check and cause the engine light to come on periodically?
Yes. I'm guessing that you own a 2000-1 Maxima because they have been plagued by those problems. My maxima has had all three oxygen sensors replaced and a mass air flow sensor as well. You can replace them yourself, but you have to take your car to a nissan dealership to get them to reprogram your ecu to be compatible with the new sensors. That will cost you around $75.
Will a bad o2 sensor make you fail a smog check and cause the engine light to come on periodically?
    yes
    probably not O2 sensor.

more likely mass air flow meter.

    nissan master tech
Mass air flow sensor/meter. You can get a cleaner at your local parts store. I would change the air filter also.

What causes the bolt for the electrical line on the alternator to catch on fire?

ok i installed a new alternator on march 13th on my 1991 honda civic we just went on a road trip and when i got back i had to change my oxygen sensor due to it failing i change that and start my car up and now on the top of my alternator the bolted electrical line not the plug caught on fire and just immediately starts to glow when the engine is running what could be causing this? how do i fix it?
What causes the bolt for the electrical line on the alternator to catch on fire?
you've got too much current running through that cable. Sounds like something wasn't grounded properly.
What causes the bolt for the electrical line on the alternator to catch on fire?
It could be that the bolt is touching a live wire .
When anything electrical catches on fire, it's usually because of a short, or too much current on the wire. Electrical shorts can happen because of many reasons, the most common being damage to the wire's insulation, which allows anything metal to take some of the current from the hot wire.

I'd check the wire, and look for areas that might be shorting out to anything metal, and I'd also check other sections of the alternator for any damage, burn spots, or melted metal/plastic.

Know that if a wire catches on fire, or shorts out, you're probably going to want to replace at least the section that had the problem, otherwise it could easily happen again, since the insulation would be heavily damaged in that area.

    Also check your grounding system.

Your engine may be running too rich or too lean due to a sensor or control problem. An oxygen sensor error code does not necessarily mean you have a bad oxygen sensor as you have found out after changing them. Now you need to follow the diagnostic procedures for such codes as should have been done to start with.

Some cars have sensors that are programed to come on when your odometer hits certain numbers. This is to remind you of an oil change, trans flush, etc... After the mechanic services your car they must reset the sensor otherwise it will stay on.

Oxygen Sensor: Is Toyota Dealer mechanic ripping me off?

Recently for my Corolla 2003 model showed the engine check sign on. I got the code checked and its say i am required to change the catalytic converter. My factory warranty covers this however the dealer told me to pay 200 dollars extra so that they can also change the Oxygen Sensor. Im not so sure about this. Someone told me that i dont have to. They can still use the old oxygen sensor. Should I listen to the mechanic at the dealer shop? Please advise.

If it's under warranty, it's under warranty and you don't pay a thing and they have to fix your car.

    Simple.

    2003 ford focus oxygen sensor...?

Ok we have changed the oxygen sensor in my car and that did nothing and the check engine light cam on again..we went back to autozone and code read oxygen sensor again...we called the ford co. and they said we have more than one..does anyone know how many and locations? thanks
    2003 ford focus oxygen sensor...?
    There are 2 O2 sensors.

There's 1 O2 sensor before the catalytic converter if you follow the piping from the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter, and 1 O2 sensor right after the catalytic converter in the exhaust piping.

The catalytic converter is mounted onto the exhaust manifold (exhaust flows from the manifold right to the converter) and then the rest of the exhaust piping comes out from the catalytic converter to the exhaust piping, muffler and resonator if you're looking from underneath the car.
    2003 ford focus oxygen sensor...?
There should be one on the exhaust manifold and another on the catalytic converter.

I have a 1993 honda civic with a bad oxygen sensor low voltage?

I want to change it but don't know if there more then the 1 that's near the header.oxygen sensor low voltage is what the computer said when my friend hooked it up.I would like to know if anyone knows which sensor that is and where is located.
I have a 1993 honda civic with a bad oxygen sensor low voltage?
I know that if you have the D15Z1 V-tec engine then the O2 sensor is on the header and should be 5 wires. red, yellow, orange, black, and white. I just had to replace the o2 sensor on my 92 Civic Hatch after doing a mini swap and putting new headers on it.
I have a 1993 honda civic with a bad oxygen sensor low voltage?
most cars that are older than 96 have only one O2 sensor. I know that your car only has one O2 sensor.
your friend must have a real fancy computer, ive never seen a computer plug into a 93 civic they don't have an obd plug on them ???

Have a replaced 3 oxygen sensors on my windstar. 1 in front and 2 at the cat. Where do I find the 4th one?

My 2002 windstar is still miss-firing and is coming back as the bank 1 oxygen sensor is bad. If I have replaced two at the catalytic converter and one in the front by the engine, where is the 4th one and how do I get to it to change it?
Have a replaced 3 oxygen sensors on my windstar. 1 in front and 2 at the cat. Where do I find the 4th one?
Yep. Just because you have an O2 sensor code, doesn't mean the Oxygen sensor is bad. If that were the case, they wouldn't bother publishing all those trouble trees. ;-)

As far as that sensor, it should be on the opposite side of the motor from the one you've already found, in or near the exhaust manifold.

But an ignition mis-fire or clogged injector or vacuum leak could set that code too.
Have a replaced 3 oxygen sensors on my windstar. 1 in front and 2 at the cat. Where do I find the 4th one?
Yes there are only 3 sorry...

You might look into changing the intake manifold gasket, it is really quite simple and you don't have to get under the car to do it. If you changed the O2 sensors you can change the manifold gasket. I have had a lot of '98 - 03 'stars in here for the same thing and 80% of the time it is the gasket..... OH yea you may just want to change your air filter(one of my mechanics was readin' over my shoulder) That does it too.

The reason for the code is not the sensor it is just the trip for the fault. I have had the misfire fault on both banks and did the O2 sensor thing before and it turned out I gave the customer the 3 sensors and I charged them for the manifold gasket change..... Well that was the more labor intensive and expensive one..
did you know you can clean the oxygen sensors...cleaner can be purchased at any auto parts store, and is a good idea every time you change the oil.

there should be one mass air sensor in the air intake...sometimes called an o2 sensor. if you have a v6 or v8 there will be 2 in the headers, or manifolds. some vehicles have sensors in the emission control system, others have a sensor in the exhast.
The O2 sensor codes are relative to bank and position. Bank refers to the side 1 or 2, bank one being on the same side of the engine as cylinder #1. And the position 1 in the manifold, position 2 in the pipe before the cat and position 3 after the cat. Find the code bank and position and you will be replacing the correct sensor.
i think they only have 3 but if it does have 4, look on the exhaust manifold.

What is an oxygen sensor? what are the symptoms of a bad one, and how do you change it?
a 02 sensor monitors the gas stream before it goes out the exhaust and sends a signal back to the computer so it can adjust the air and gas mixture. the coolant has a sensor too. maybe it,s the coolant sensor.

Oxygen sensor? only change it when service light turn on?

i dont know whats oxygen sensor is and dont know why to repair

i got 6 years old car and it has 35000 mileage of it

i am afraid my parts are old and dont know how to see when oxygen sensor needs to repair?
Oxygen sensor? only change it when service light turn on?
If your car is running rich (you smell unburned gas) or your gas mileage severely decreased, then the o2 sensor may be the problem.

Not necessarily when only the service engine light turns on.

Note : They usually last for around 60,000 miles. So don't worry about it for now.
Oxygen sensor? only change it when service light turn on?
You can get your car check at autozone to see if you need a new oxygen sensor. If the check engine light hasnt come on dont worry about it. The oxygen is located on the side of the exaust manifold which is the thing that is connected to ur exaust and muffler. Some cars have 2 O2 sensors.
when the %26quot;check engine light%26quot; or service light doesn't mean you need to replace the oxygen sensor, fisrt you need to pull codes so it could be something else there more than 200 codes,

you have 35k miles so parts don't go that bad you need a 30k service just follow this list

every 30,000 miles change or flush transmission fluid, coolant(even if it looks clean), brake fluid change cabin air filter if you have one, power steering fluid flush, de carbonize throttle body and intake,

every 60,000 timing belt(may vary in manufacture) plugs if there platium other wise do it at 45,000 miles

if you do this trust me you're car will last along time

What does if it mean if the check engine light comes, after having a new oxygen sensor fitted?

The car started to pull, almost like it wasnt getting enough petrol through. The check engine light came on on long journeys so i got the oxygen sensor changed as thats what they said was wrong. The pulling then stopped, but only about a month later it has started again, so its jerky to drive! If you knock it out of gear and rev the engine a few times its seems to sort the problem but only for a short time. Its worse when you start the engine from cold, but still does it, but to a lesser point when warm! any ideas?
What does if it mean if the check engine light comes, after having a new oxygen sensor fitted?
I would check the engine codes again. it doesnt sound like an o2 sensor because the computer does not use it when the engine is cold. sounds like you may have a fuel problem or an ignition problem. check the fuel pressure and pull the plugs and see what they look like
What does if it mean if the check engine light comes, after having a new oxygen sensor fitted?
Have it checked by a qualified tech. They should understand the system and controls in place to control the emissions
Most cars have more then one oxygen sensor, so it's possible that one of the others have failed. It also sounds like you have something else going on, best bet would be to take it to someone knowelgable, have them test for fault, clear codes, retest then run the tests on the first code that re-appears, it might not be the 02 sensor that is faulty but something else causing a false code.
Check and or change you fuel filter if its dragin under lode then you have a feul prbl. also try disconecting the posative poast of your battery for two-three mins. it will erase any problum codes and will give a new code if there is a problum with something els . if your car is a dodge product you can retrive your one codes turn the key on and off three times then on and count the check eng. lite flashes blink blink. . blink blink blink is code 23 for example good luck BRAD

How much would this tune up cost?

I have 97 thunderbird v-8 4.6 liter with 80,000 miles. Car runs fine except when i accelerate it bogs like at a stop sign or when i first start it. What would it cost to replace fuel filter, air filter, plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, PCV,oxygen sensor,Change the points and condenser, flush some fluids if it needs it like transmission or antifreeze. How much would this cost?
How much would this tune up cost?
Your engine does not have a distributor or points and a condenser so there would be no need for a cap, rotor or plug wires. Your engine is COP= coil over plug and it requires platinum spark plugs in fact double platinum's were used in that engine. It sounds like your just throwing parts at it to see if it will fix the problem rather than diagnosis the real problem. Your plugs are changed at 100,000 miles, so they are not due at this time. How about a fuel pressure test to see if the engine is getting enough fuel pressure to support acceleration and then go from there. Just a suggestion rather than throwing parts at it for no good reason. Transmission service and engine coolant flush is probably a good idea and can be done for under $200.00 parts included. Good Luck

Can not doing oil change on time ruin your oxygen sensor.?

(p1167) engine check sign. I want to know is this happening because i didn't do oil change on time.
Can not doing oil change on time ruin your oxygen sensor.?
Unless you did serious damage to the engine (such as running it with no oil) there is no relation between the time between oil changes and the O2 sensor.
Can not doing oil change on time ruin your oxygen sensor.?
No,oil change has nothing to do with it.
they dont effect each other. oil changes have nothing to do with the exhaust
no oil and o2 sensors are not linked together whatsoever
You would have to skip oil changes for like 5 or 6 YEARS before the o2 sensor would be affected by the worn out rings, and resulting oil burning.
the o2 sensor failure is merely a coincidence, not at all related to the oil change.
yes you need to change your oil. that is why the check engine light is on no it does not effect you h2o sensor

ITS LIKE A PLUG N PLAY
Is a oxygen sensor hard to change?
Shiela, there is a specialized wrench to change the O2 sensor. It is a wrench that has an opening for the wires that attach to the sensor. I didn't have much luck with this wrench, so I bought crow's-foot wrenches and used a ratchet with one.

The sensors are in there pretty tight because of all of the heat they see. The hardest part for me was reaching the thing. After that, it was a matter of arm strength.

The new sensor should come with thread lube to prevent the sensor from welding itself (with rust) to the pipe.

The number of sensors is dependent on the number of catalytic converters you have. One converter, one sensor, etc.

Get a Haynes manual ($20) for your car. It will give you a procedure.
it isn't and your going to need wd-40 or penetrating fluid but it is really easy just breaking it free is the hard part and when you go to buy the part they let you know for sure on how many you need in your case it could be two if it is a four cylinder and for a eight cylinder four.
not hard at all just a plug

What kind of problems can i have if my Oxygen Sensor is bad on my Jeep Grande Cherokee?

My jeeps RPMs jump really high when it changes gears, and i took it to a mechanic and they told me that the transmission was fine. Could it be the oxygen sensor that controls the amount of air going to the engine?
What kind of problems can i have if my Oxygen Sensor is bad on my Jeep Grande Cherokee?
NO. You may have a problem with the accelerator cable. Make sure the throttle body flap closes completely. Clean the throttle body. You may also have a problem with the temperature sensor for the ECU. If it is out of spec. it may be telling the ECU to make the mixture richer, making the vehicle idle higher.02 senors that throw codes are usually on the lean side.
What kind of problems can i have if my Oxygen Sensor is bad on my Jeep Grande Cherokee?
I had a bad o2 sensor in my car too once. Make sure it isnt an electrical problem caused by a short. If your o2 sense is out, you might also be getting really really bad gas milage.
No it's not the O2 sensors. It is also not the throttle body blades as it does it part throttle. Further, O2 sensors go RICH when they start to fail.

It has to be something mechanical with the transmission. Think about it - if the engine revs for any reason without movement then the engine is working but the power is not making it to the wheels.

Perhaps low transmission fluid - check that first. Directions are in the manual or call the dealership (if they sound clueless hang up and try another dealership).
The O2 sensors tell the engine how much fuel is going by the cylinders and it controls the fuel air mixture through the computer. When the O2 sensor(s) fail you will have a huge reduction in fuel economy, and you'll start having a few issues with sluggishness as the computer tries to adjust itself to an O2 sensor not functioning. Also you'll have a %26quot;CHECK ENGINE%26quot; light on.

If u havent changed your pcv, oxygen sensor, and fuel filter how can it effect your car?

Well your PCV valve can stick once its old and either cause a vacuum leak or cause the crank case to pressurize (and blowing gaskets), your 02 sensors should only be replaced once they are deemed faulty, as the tell the computer how much fuel to give your engine and an accurate 02 sensor means top fuel mileage. A clogged fuel filter will make your fuel pump work harder and decrease the life of the pump substantially thus making for a very costly repair. Hope this helped.
If u havent changed your pcv, oxygen sensor, and fuel filter how can it effect your car?
How far have you driven that car? How long are you talking about?
If u havent changed your pcv, oxygen sensor, and fuel filter how can it effect your car?
Pcv valve controls block ventilation, can lead to sludge build up in your oil system. Also acid formation in your oil.

Fuel filter blockage can lead to early fuel pump burn out, and a lean fuel mixture, that leads to detonation and piston damage.

The oxygen sensor is part of the fuel injection feed back system, it tells the computer how much unburned oxygen is in the exhaust stream. The computer uses that info to set the injector pulse width.

When changing my oxygen senors on my 1999 chevy suburban 2500 7.4 lt where is bank 1 sensor 2 located at?

Bank 1 is always the bank that cylinder number 1 is located. The sensors are identified from the direction of exhaust flow.

On your Chevy, cylinder 1 is located driver's side front of engine. Sensor 2 is downstream of the catalytic converter and is also called the catalytic monitor sensor.
When changing my oxygen senors on my 1999 chevy suburban 2500 7.4 lt where is bank 1 sensor 2 located at?
Bank 1 is usually on the side of the engine with cylinder 1. It's the one that's after the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is also known as the downstream sensor. It senses the efficiency of the converter. If you have a code scanner, you could unplug it and see which code pops up.

1995 grand cherokee oxygen sensor location?
Your O2 sensor is going to be located on your headers or right before your catalytic converter. Get under the jeep and look at the headers leading to your motor. You should see a your o2 sensor sticking out and it will kinda look like a spark plug sticking out. It shouldn't be too hard to replace the only thing is you might need a special socket to loosen it without tearing apart the piggyback.
1995 grand cherokee oxygen sensor location?
refer to your manual for the vehicle it will say where it is
The first responder is correct, it is on the driver's side of the exhaust tube and just before the catalytic converter. I've replaced dozens of these without the need for a special tool, but they do make an O2 socket. You may want to hit the threads with some PB Blaster the day before you want to pull it. In reality there is so much heat in this part of the exhaust that it doesn't usually seize-up too badly. Just use a box-end wrench with another attached to the end for leverage and it'll come out.

it could be that, or it sounds like your converter is showing early signs of bein plugged, so i suggest changing the o2 sensor and if it still does it u might wanna see if the converter is plugged...my car did the same thing then it got worse and eventually wouldnt even start cuz it wasnt gettin any gas
your problem is most likely your fuel filter, air filter, and pcv valve .............they could be clogged autozone.com has a trouble shooting guide that will help you figure it out
If the O2 sensor was bad then I would think that you would have a CEL (Check Engine Light). O2 sensor will last about 60,000 miles, maybe a little more before they start to fail.
The o2 sensor works only to sense the heated gas at the exhaust and transmit it to your box, it determines the mixture of air and gas... is your ranger a diesel fed or gas? if it is a diesel go check the injection pump and the fuel filter, if it is a gas go check the fuel pump and the fuel fiter and also the coils may be some of them are busted....

NONE of the sensors in your car have a replacement schedule. They should be replaced IF and when they fail. You can safely drive the car for a while with a bad O2 sensor. Your performance will suffer, but no damage will result unless you put it off for a significant time after the 'check engine' light is triggered.

    Changing out an O2 sensor?

I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima, and just found out that the oxygen sensor on the passenger side is not working anymore. How do I go about getting it changed (by myself), and what are some good quality sensors, and what are some affordable brands (I tend to be cheap sometimes, but not cheap enough to buy a piece of crap sensor). Any tips, advice, videos, diagrams, etc. would be most helpful. Thanks!
    Changing out an O2 sensor?
They make a special socket for changing out the sensor for about 10 dollars but if you can get a straight wrench {7/8%26quot;} on it then you don't need the socket. The sensor is in the exhaust pipe after the manifold but before the cat. converter, and has an elec. wire going to it. Unplug the wire and slide the box end of a straight wrench over it and turn counter clockwise to remove. Reverse to install and plug back in. %26quot;Bosch%26quot; is the standard and is what I use.
    Changing out an O2 sensor?
changing it out is real easy it will screw out and then you need to re-thread the new one back in place and tighten it up snug then go about 1/2 turn with it,that will be enough to hold it in,then you,ll need to have the trouble code erased from the compute or it will still show up as being bad, those use a 13/16 wrench to loosen and install them if im not mistaken and bosch is about the best brand to get for that one its not to cheap but a real good sensor with a years warranty on it,you cant beat that, good luck.
How do you know the sensor is bad? If you've made sure with a scan-tool, it's as simple as replacing a sparkplug. You will need a special socket for sensors to remove it. You should locate the sensor, and soak it with a penetrating oil like WD-40, PB Blaster, or something similar the evening before the day you'll do this. If you can get a box-end wrench on it, a few taps with a hammer (on the wrench) should loosen it enough to make removal easier. Your best bet is to check out Expert Village to see if a video is available. If not, I recommend Haynes manuals because they have beau coup pictures.
i use a 7/8 wrench on mine. all you do is disconnect the battery, unhook the sensor wire, screw out the old 1 and screw the new 1 in. you will have to clear the codes after you get done.
Go to a auto parts store and bye you the oem sensor. REQUEST it. And then bye a O2 sensor socket and in ten minutes your done.
if it doesnt come out easy then buy some PB BLASTER .ox sensors can be a bear to remove, soak it down and wait,it will save you stripped threads..

You could go to parts store or Sears %26amp; get an Oxygen Sensor wrench if you don't already have one. It gives you a better bite on the sensor without rounded the sensors edges. You can try that, if it won't budge, you may need t put it on a lift to get better access t it. Sometimes they won't come off without destroying the threads %26amp; in that case you will have to replace whatever it was screwed to.

start the car, warm it up

    2003 Pontiac Sunfire oxygen sensors?
It will only shorten the life of the catalytic converter if the engine is running lean, if it is running rich then you don't have to worry about it. Cats can run red hot and more fuel will cool it down, just like how gas feels cold to the touch if you get it on your skin. It is still recommended to replace bad sensors, and you may fail a emissions test if you have to get one.

The light only comes on occassionally, and the car doesn't jerk or lose power when this comes on. Is this a major problem, and would it be an expensive repair?

    Thanks in advance.
ECU fault on Vauxhall Astra M reg 1.4i - what is a fault code 13 (oxygen sensor: no change in voltage) mean?
it means that you need to look up the code in a service manual, and perform the indicated tests to see where the problem is. the computer codes only tell you what system is being affected, they dont tell you what the problem is.

u could try an oxy sensor from a car breakers and get ur codes reset. this may solve the prob and save u paying mega bucks at a garage
you have a faulty oxygen sensor (lambda sensor), the voltage at the sensor should be changing constantly to control the air fuel mixture, if you take the car for an m.o.t. it will fail due to the emissions being to high and the mistake a lot of tester make is that they will tell you that the catalyst converter is at fault and charge you a fortune to replace it when all your car needs is a new lambda sensor, these can be bought at good motor factors and all you need to change it is a 22mm spanner.
Hi, code 13 is usually caused by code 14 which is a map sensor problem, Best thing to do is check the line from the sensor for vacuum leaks or (just replace the line not a big deal) and be done with it getting that out of the way, sometimes moisture/ water will get it messed up, you may still have to replace the sensor. --- Code 13 coming up means you have a loss in the manifold pressure which both work together and if one reads a little different you will get a light. Also to be on the safe side check the ground from the unit. Last thing i would do is replace the oxygen sensor, but it never hurts to replace it anyway, it's just a $20. part, But i know how feels to depart with money buying parts that may not be the problem but sometimes that the only way. Hope this helps and don't forget to vote!!!!!!

Can anyone help me change out an oxygen sensor?

I have a 2001 chevy silverado and my check engine light just came on with two codes reading cylidlnder 8 backfire???... And oxygen sensor fail. Never changed o2 sensor but understand its not too difficult. I found this site: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQChevroletQQSilverado_1500_HDQQReplacementQQOxygen_SensorQQ20012007QQUSOS-1000.html?apwcid=P1135867996W43b3f85c7ab9e%26amp;gan=1%26amp;apwidYut7O5k

is this the correct part? And is there any advice you can give me about approaching these check engine light problems? Thanks.

The O2 sensor fault code is telling you that the computer thinks there is something wrong with your air mixture. 9 times out of 10 the O2 sensor fault code is not a bad sensor. It could be an air leak, vacuum leak, a dirty air filter, a bad catalytic converter, fuel pressure, or a number of other things. I'm not saying don't replace it but don't be surprised if a new sensor doesn't fix the problem. You might want to run a few diagnostics before blindly putting in a new sensor.

From the description of your truck it looks like the right one. You'll need a special socket to remove the sensor. It has a cut-out in the side for the wire lead to go through. And you'll need the socket because an O2 sensor gets hot and cause the threads seize up over time. Without the six point socket the hex will just round off. Disconnect the lead wire, remove the old one, reverse steps to install. Put some high temperature anti-seize compound on the threads before you screw it in.
IT HELP IF YOU SHOW WHAT ENGINE CODES YOU GET FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. YOU DON%26quot;T WANT TO REPLACE PARTS THAT YOU DON%26quot;T NEED. TO BE ACCURATE TO FIX YOUR CAR, PLEASE STATE THE CODES SO I CAN GIVE YOU STEP BY STEP
