S it hard to change an oxygen sensor in a 2002 mercury sable?

ok so my boyfriends check engine light came on he took it to a place to get checked out and one place said it was the maf sensor so i thought no biggie pretty simple but then another place said it was the oxygen sensor which kinda threw me off since i was new to the maf sensor so i researched figured out how they tie into each other but how can i find out which it is and if it is the oxygen sensor is that hard to change out?|||Sounds like a lean code going on, Look for a vacuum leak, or the MAF is dirty and can be cleaned with brake cleaner by spraying a little on the 2 thin wires in it, being careful not to brake them|||It is easy to change, just a 7/8%26quot;or 22mm wrench, but have to know which one, there are four of those, have to know the trouble code number (s)to see.

At what mileage should a oxygen sensor be changed?

2000 Mustang 86,000 miles fuel consumsion is ok but is it time to replace the O2 sensor. The car has 2 sensors so cost is a factor.|||Actually, I was under the impression that there was a mileage increment in which to change them...something along the 50,000 mile mark and I thought I read it in the manual. I could be wrong though.

Either way, when they%26#039;re ready to go, you%26#039;ll know. Your engine will run like crap and you%26#039;ll get a %26quot;sevice engine%26quot; light.|||there isnt a set time to change the sensor, usually only change them when there faulty, usually the engine management light will light and you will have to have the fault codes read. If they are faulty you can can sometimes get away with just cleaning them if there faulty|||Service engine light will come on if you have a engine sensor problem. No light on , don%26#039;t bother worrying|||40-60,000 miles is what most manufactuers suggest, however in real life most people wait until the check engine light comes on.

How important is it to change a oxygen sensor in a mini cooper ?

Your oxygen sensor controls your air to fuel mixture. A bad one could cause poor mileage or poor performance. Bosch (a sensor manufacture) recommends replacing them at 100,000 miles. I personally dont change them till they malfunction. A respectable auto repair shop can check them with a good scanner for you. I have seen a few bad ones that did not turn a service light on the customers had drivability complaints.|||An O2 sensor is not a recommended maintenance item. they are not meant to be changed at any interval. It only becomes important to change the O2 sensor if it has been determined that it is faulty.|||if it causes a chk eng lite an throws an 02 code yes,if bad it will send bad info 2 engine computer, its 1 of the items computr uses to detrmine air fuel mixture,an ull fail state emission insp, besides must r ez fixed for 20$|||It doesn%26#039;t matter what make vehicle it is. If it goes bad it needs to be replaced.|||i would not change it until it has a problem with either the heater or the sensor. it is the logic of if it aint broke why fix it. ive got an o2 sensor with 240,000 miles on it.

How do I change the Oxygen Sensor on a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta?

I just need a picture or location of the sensor so I can replace it.|||It%26#039;s on the exhaust manifold, it looks kinda like a spark plug. There is one before the catalytic converter, and one after.

How hard is it to change an Oxygen sensor on a 2001 Chevy Tracker?

The mechanic wants to charge $500+ to do it and says the part is around $220. This seems high and I%26#039;m tempted to try and change it myself. However I%26#039;m new to this stuff so I was wondering what the difficulty level is. I know on standard vehicles it is supposed to be pretty straight forward, but my Tracker is 4CYL/4WD. Does this make it more difficult and that is the reason for the $300+ labor fee? Any help is appreciated.|||Go to the Chevy parts counter and ask to see the oxygen sensor. I%26#039;ve never heard of one costing that much. It can be located in the exhaust pipe very close to where it%26#039;s bolted to the exhaust manifold. In your case they may need to disconnect many things to get at it. If you don%26#039;t get a good answer there, try Car Quest, NAPA or Advance Auto in that order. Car Quest and NAPA sell exhaust systems ask to see the primary pipe and it%26#039;ll show where the sensor is. Good Luck|||Thanks to all who responded.

|||if you have the tools and the haynes manual then do it your self. unless your car is rusted up then its really hard to do, just make sure you have a manual and you read the instructions|||should not be too hard. he may be changing both sensors for that price. there are 2 on the vehicle. 1 in front of the converter and one in the rear. is there a code? what number is it?

Is it ok if my oxygen sensors are reversed on my car?

I just had someone change my exhaust manifold, calaytic converter, and 02 sensors on my 1998 Honda Civic. I just found out that they might have been put in reversed (top on bottom and bottom on top). Is this ok to have or should I have it changed back?|||The same sensor is used in both positions -- no problem with that is possible.

The wiring won%26#039;t even begin to reach from the upper to the one downstream of the catalytic converter if you try to swap the connectors on the two sensors -- no problem with that is possible.

Unless someone has been fooling around with the wiring (literally swapping pins in a connector or doing some serious cut and splice work in your harness), it%26#039;s not possible to %26quot;reverse%26quot; them.

IF, on the other hand, someone HAS been fiddling around with the wiring such that these two have been reversed, then yes, it%26#039;s a real problem as it will be seriously fouling up the computer%26#039;s understanding of your pre-converter mixture at the %26quot;upper%26quot; sensor. The %26quot;upper%26quot; pre-converter one is important to how well your engine runs. The post-converter (%26quot;lower%26quot;) one just provides an indication of how well your emissions controls are operating.

.|||I%26#039;m not sure what you mean by top and bottom O2 sensors, but if one is upstream and one is downstream, they must be put back in the correct location or it can kind of play tricks on your vehicle%26#039;s computer. Each measures the same thing, but the levels of what they measure are different; the computer knows which is upstream and which is downstream. (Note: upstream= before catalytic convertor, downstream= after convertor) Now, if the O2 sensors are both upstream or both downstream, they should still be in the right place, but if they aren%26#039;t you may never know any difference. Hope this helps.|||That wont make a difference for the sensors as top O2 sensor or bottom O2 sensor...... an oxygen sensor is an oxygen sensor..... it will be ok, dont worry about it.

How do you change the oxygen sensor in a 2000 Chevy Metro?

Step by step instructions please, including where the thing is located. I thought it was under the hood but then I saw a picture and it looked like it was underneath the car. Thank you in advance!|||There are two on the vehicle. One is before the catalytic converter, just behind the AC compressor, this is the upstream O2 sensor, then there is another after the converter, this is the downstream O2 sensor. You need to know exactly which one you need to replace. A diagnostic check will tell you for sure. If you have a check engine or service engine soon lamp, an O2 sensor may not be the problem, it needs to be diagnosed by a reputable repair shop to know exactly why the lamp came on. The O2 sensor requires an O2 sensor removal tool from the local auto parts store, or a 7/8 inch wrench, if you can get the wrench to it. The upstream O2 sensor on your vehicle, behind the AC compressor, is a little hard to get to and probably will require the O2 sensor removal tool.

Whats the purpose and why would you cange a sub oxygen sensor?

im going to change the oxygen sensor but i don%26#039;t know why i would need or the use of a sub oxygen sensor.|||I dont know what a sub oxygen sensor, but the oxygen sensor is part of you emmissions system. The short answer, you have to have it to pass smog. The sensor detects the air mixture of the exhaust and tells the cars computer if there is any need to adjust the fuel and air mixture for optimum engine performance.|||it monitors your exhaust output and sends a signal to the ECM that regulates the map sensor for the amount of air.|||I%26#039;m assuming a %26quot;sub oxygen sensor%26quot; is the down-stream oxygen sensor. This is used to determine if the catalytic converter is doing it%26#039;s job by comparing the readings form it to the up-stream O2 sensor. This %26quot;checking system%26quot; is mandated by the government for emission purposes.

How many oxygen sensors in a 1997 tahoe 4 wheel drive and where are they, are they easy to change by oneself?

4 total, two up steam of the cat and two down stream. not hard to replace, 7/8 open end wrench or a 02 sensor socket.|||4 Sensors Total.

Replacing the Sensor

# Warm the engine up for a couple of minutes before you attempt to replace the sensor. This will expand the metal and make removing the sensor much easier. While the engine is running, spray a large amount of lubricant along the threaded joint of the faulty sensor(s) and allow it to soak in.

Disconnect the wire harness outlet from the sensor. The wire from the sensor runs about seven to eight inches from the sensor, and it is retained by a plastic clip, to prevent it from contacting the hot exhaust system.

Use a 22-mm combination hand wrench or an oxygen sensor socket and ratchet to remove the sensor. If using a wrench, insert the disconnect sensor wire through the box-end side of the combination wrench. If using an O2 sensor socket, insert the wire into the slot on the side of the socket. Turn the sensor counter-clockwise until it is loose. The sensors only have four to five threads, so it won%26#039;t take much to loosen them enough to be removed by hand.

Apply a very light coat of anti-seize compound to the threaded section of the new sensor. Most direct-fit quality replacement sensors may already have a light coat on the threads. Be sure, if you have to add some on, that you do not get any on the thimble-shaped sensor--only a very light coat on the threads.

Thread the sensor into the port by hand at first, so that you don%26#039;t cross-thread it. Tighten the sensor snugly with the wrench or socket and ratchet, but be careful not to over-tighten it. Since it only has four to five threads, sensors are very easily stripped out by over-tightening.

Plug the wire harness connection back together and re-secure the wire to the plastic retaining clip.

Resetting the Check Engine Light

# Bring the Tahoe back to the parts store that sold you the O2 sensor(s) and scanned the trouble code for you. They will usually offer to reset the %26quot;Service Engine Soon%26quot; light for you. However, once the sensor(s) have been replaced, the computer will detect the new component and begin running through an inspection and maintenance (IM) self-diagnostic mode. This may take a few driving cycles to perform, as the engine needs to heat up and cool down repeatedly. Once the IM monitors have completed the self-diagnostic and detected that the new replacement sensor is performing its intended task, the on-board computer will turn off the %26quot;Service Engine Soon%26quot; light.

%26lt;/snip%26gt;|||I assume you%26#039;re doing this because you have a fault code indicating a problem with the oxygen sensor reading. Nine out of ten times the problem is not the sensor itself but a problem elsewhere in the engine, usually an air leak in the induction system. I%26#039;d suggest you check manifold pressure before throwing money away on an oxygen sensor you don%26#039;t need.

How often to replace Oxygen Sensors?

2001 Kia Rio, 70,000 miles, check engine light on, stays on. Been told it is more than likely because of bad oxygen sensors. The Rio I have been told takes 2.

When is it recommended to change them? Would that be normal for them to go at this little mileage?

Thanks.|||They do go bad .

But most of the time when a code for a o2 sensor comes up .

It is from something else.

Like if you have a intake vacuum leak dirty mass air flow sensor.

And so on Willl cause a lean or rich o2 sensor reading.

Over fueling for long a long time or a hard direct hit on them wil damage them.

Have it scaned to see what codes come up is just o2 sensors

replace them.

If a lean or rich codes come up as well fix first them first.

Hope this helps .|||the question is how in the hell did a kia rio get up to 70000 miles???|||the o2 sensor will be of the exhaust by the manifold, very easy to replace, but if in doubt take to a garage to be safe only replace them if the engine management light comes on and gives you that code|||Yes its normal ,Go have it replaced before spark plugs go out too|||96 and up vehicles are very good at self diagnostics and will let you know as yours may be doing. there are codes that can be related to the oxygen sensor and not actually be the oxygen sensor thats bad, so get it diagnosed by a pro so you don%26#039;t waste money. the average life of an oxygen sensor on an obd2 car (96 and up) is about 100k.|||How often do you change oxygen sensors? Never, in a perfect world.

There are about a thousand possible causes for a check engine light. Your car has 2 Oxygen Sensors. What are the odds that is really the problem. Blaming O2 sensors is what the ignorant do in a Check Engine light situation.

At the very least you need to have the codes read or you%26#039;ll just be throwing money at a problem without knowing what the problem is. Ideally you should have a proper diagnostic done.

How many oxygen sensors are on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix? And are they hard to change? thanks.?

I purchased this car about 2 weeks ago %26amp; its got a bad idle to it. So i took it to Advanced Auto Parts %26amp; they put it on a tester thing %26amp;%26amp; said the %26quot;oxygen sensor%26quot; was bad. They said that there may be more than one but i have no clue where to locate these. Anything could help me at this point. Thanks.|||IIRC one is on the header and the other is within a foot from the catalytic converter (going towards the rear) The special tool spoken of is basically a pair of pliers with the end in the shape of a hex like a socket, but you can also use a set of vise grips and do it that way. One thing to remember is that especially because its an older car, it may not have been changed ever so its probably rusted in and you WILL strip it! :/ I recommend you drench it in WD40 or liquid wrench over and over and hope it will break it lose. I believe all cars have 2 sensors cause the ECU has to get a reading before and after the cat for a proper reading.

Good luck with the change.|||I drive a 2000 Grand AM and my check engine light has been on for over a year now and the computer scan only says the oxygen sensor is bad. So I would think your car would still be ok to drive for quite a while. Also you can just call a repair shop and ask their advice an O2 sensor costs about $70 plus labor for installation.|||it should have 2 oxygen sensors they aren%26#039;t that hard to replace you do need a special socket to remove them on some cars not sure if your does or not they will either be in your exhaust manifold or under the car towards the front with wired connected to them looks almost like a over sized spark plug with a wire coming out of top of it|||One right behind the motor in the back manifold #1 and another under the car #2. They are easy to change as long as they turn out with out taking out the threads. Depending on which Code Number Auto-Parts store found Heater O2 sensor #1 or #2

How much to change a oxygen sensor?

How much would a mechanic charge to replace the front oxygen sensor on a 2001 CRV?|||The sensors run about $30.00, labor should be about $50.00/|||probably an hour of labor (if that charging wise) and about 100 bucks for the part

Do both sensors on a 1999 mazda miata have to be changed when the code says to replace oxygen sensor?

The last three auto shops have only replaced the sensor after the CAT and not the one by the manifold|||I would replace both, although the guys are right. The front one is the important one|||The code itself specifies the sensor that has failed. I just replaced a rear sensor on my 2002 with a Bosch 15733 generic.|||Get the header checked out. These do crack and cause a fault reading of the O2 senors. The down comer (from the header to the cat) can also develop a crack and the same thing happens.|||Typically the one after the CAT never needs to be replaced. 99% of the time it is the front o2 sensor that needs to be replaced since that is the one that the computer needs to adjust fuel.

After you replace an oxygen sensor will the check engine light turn off automatically?

I just had the downstream oxygen sensor changed on my 2003 Monte Carlo and was wondering if the check engine light would turn off by itself eventually?

Or do I have to unplug the battery?

|||No the light will not turn off right away. You can disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for 10-15mins, or take the car to an Autozon or Advance auto parts and they will reset the light for free.|||Not necessarily, you may have other problems that%26#039;s causing the engine light to stay on.|||you unhook the battery before you install it, wait awhile and hook the battery back up. that should clear the codes.|||Unplugging the battery rests the computer. Course I would have disconnected the battery before replacing the sensor.|||After you put in the new sensor, disconect the negative battery terminal for a few minutes then reconnect it. that will reset your check engine light. after about 90 or so miles, if your check engine light doesn%26#039;t come back on, you should be in the clear.|||It will turn itself off if that was the only thing making it go on. Usually after 25 closed-loop cycles on most vehicles.|||depending on what year you are talking about, it could but that would be on a pre 96 car. on the obd2 systems, it need to see 40 successful drive cycles before that light will go off on its own. unplugging the battery might not do it

How can I change the oxygen sensor on my 2005 Aveo?

I recently had the computer in my engine diagnosed due to a check engine light being on. The result, my oxygen sensor was faulty and needs to be replaced. I%26#039;d rather do this myself, so I was wondering how difficult it would be and if anybody knows how to do this. Thanks!|||Well you crawl up under the vehicle and find your catylic converter and there should be something sticking out of the pipe in front or behind the cat, and that would be your oxygen sensor. Once you have found it find a wrench that fits it, the sensor on my vehicle takes a size 13/16, but yours may be different. Then you unplug it from the connector.. then loosen it with the wrech. It should turn out with no problem. The new one will go in just like the old one came out. hope i helped. Oh and you may need to get the check engine light code flashed or it will stay on.|||there is a small sensor (has a nut on one end and two wires on the other). it is installed on the exhaust pipe in front of the catalytic converter.

How many oxygen sensors are on a Dodge Caravan '96?

Are they so hard to get at that I have to take the car to a shop to change them? Are sensors considered regular maintenance? that is, should I change them every 50,000 miles?|||There are 2 oxygen sensors in a %26#039;96 Caravan. One is mounted in the exhaust manifold, the second is mounted just behind the catalytic converter. Most manufacturers recommend changing them at 60,000 mile intervals as preventive maintenance, but they generally will last much longer, especially if you do a lot of highway driving. If you have an emissions test in your state and the vehicle passes OK, and/or your %26quot;Check Engine%26quot; lite is not on, I%26#039;d leave them alone (JMHO). Depending on what engine you have determines the difficulty in changing the sensor(s). On all engines, the sensor mounted in the catalytic converter is easy to change. Exhaust mounted oxygen sensors are as follows: On the 2.4 liter engine, you%26#039;ll need to remove the air cleaner/resonator assembly, and you need a special O2 sensor socket to change it . On the 3.0 liter V-6, Remove the Air cleaner upper and lower housing to change it, but you%26#039;ll still need an O2 sensor socket. Now, on the 3.3/3.8 Liter V-6, it%26#039;s a nightmare to change. You need to unplug the electrical connector from the top of the vehicle. Then raise the vehicle, and using a 7/8%26quot; crows-foot and a flex head ratchet, you can slowly remove the sensor (VERY tight work space). Also, USE ONLY CHRYSLER SENSORS!! I have seen so many problems with aftermarket sensors, it%26#039;s not funny. Sorry for the long post, HTH!!|||A sensor will go anytime

It is located on the upper part of the exhaust near the manifold

and you should only have 1

Some are hard to get at

But I bet you can do it...|||here are the instructions from auto zone|||This depends on if it%26#039;s six cylinders or four and since this is an OBD 2 vehicle, it will have two for each bank. A four has two and a six has four. There will be one before and one after the catalytic converter. They should be changed every 40,000 miles.|||I%26#039;ve got a 97, and they%26#039;re not all that tough. The hardest was the upstream. If you%26#039;ve ever changed the plugs in your van, then you know how hard it is to get your arm back there? Well, you have to reach a little farther to get to the O2 sensor. It%26#039;s gonna be hard to do without the right tool. I think AutoZone lends them. I ended up having to cut the wire and use a plug wrench to get it. But that worked just fine. It%26#039;s totally worth doing it yourself and saving a lot of money. I%26#039;m a chick, if I can do it, you can.|||one

I changed both oxygen sensors in my 2001 Toyota Solara convertible ....?

then reset the code with a OBD can tester. But, shortly after starting, the %26quot;Check engine%26quot; light goes back on and the same code 1135 (bank 1, sensor 1, heater circuit failure) gets stored. Now THAT sensor did have a faulty heater. Is there some intermediate component between the sensor and the computer or some other service I must render to correct this problem?

Professional answers, please!|||I have run into some vehicles with fused power to the O2 heater.

Heater goes bad, draws too much amperage and blows the fuse.

replace the O2 and the fuse is blown and it will set the code again because the O2 heater cannot work .

Check your power distribution block under the hood for a blown fuse.|||I would check the connector for any corrosion. These sensors run on a low voltage so are prone to being affected by bad connectors, also follow up the wire and ensure it is not damaged.

Oxygen sensors on newer vehicles; how often should a change should they be changed?

I have 1987 Dodge 1/2 ton pick-up and a 1991 Ramcharger. They both run really well. I have them maintained as best as I can. There is the 318ci engine in both vehicles. One has a carburator and the other has a throttle body injection system.|||on really new vehicles most don%26#039;t recommend until after 100,000 miles or until they fail. on older vehicles probably 30,000 miles because their emissions systems aren%26#039;t as advanced they foul up sooner.|||as soon as they go bad! when u failed smog test it could be one of those factors!|||They only need changing when they set a %26#039;diagnostic%26#039;! You%26#039;ll know this by the check engine light.|||ALL OF THE ABOVE, THE CK ENG LIGHT WILL COME ON WHEN IT DOES SO YOU CAN GO TO SOME PARTS HOUSES, NOT ALL OF THEM, %26amp; THEY DO A COMPLIMENTORY DIAGNOSTICS FOR YOU %26amp; LET YOU KNOW WHAT THEY FOUND

How does one change an Oxygen sensor on a Honda Accord 1999?

is it fairly easy, like changing spark plugs?|||Carefully|||You need a special Oxygen sensor socket. You can get one a about any parts store for around $15-$25. It fits on the end of a ratchet. The OS will unscrew just like a spark plug and usually has one wire attached to it that will unplug near the end of the sensor.

Happy wrenching.|||Unscrew it.|||It depends on which one it is. You have two of them and one is harder to replace than the other. You will need a lift to do it though as they are both in a tight spot and there is wiring involved if you do not by a brand new one.

If you do not have a lot of experience with automobiles then i would highly suggest leaving that to a pro.|||yes, but you may need a special tool to do it. go to advance auto or auto zone to check. and yes, it is like changing a spark plug................|||yes very easy 15/16ths wrench or a special o2sensor socket|||The best advice I can give would be to go to the parts store and buy the book about 1999 Honda Accords. That will tell you step by step. Good Luck.

how do i change the oxygen sensor on a 1986 monte carlo?|||With a wrench.

It is on the header, has 1 wire going to it.|||It just unscrews from the exhaust manifold. Make sure you use the anti seize compound that comes with the sensor or you%26#039;ll have a lot o trouble getting it out next time.

How challenging is changing an oxygen sensor (bank 1, sensor 2) for my 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera ?

My oxygen sensor got overheated in my 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera. It is in bank1 sensor 2, would I need anything other than a new oxygen sensor? Any specific type? I asked a mechanic and he was going to charge me $200 to put in a new one. I can purchase an oxygen sensor for $20-$60 online. What would be my best option? Let a professional do it, for more money than I probably have, or, take a risk and change the part myself?|||no need to purchase on line as can get at your local auto zone or Kragen etc. you may need a special socket to remove if really tight. unplug leads then remove old unit, screw in new one and plug in electrical leads. Hardest part is getting under the vehicle. Be sure to jack up safely using jack stands.|||Depends, is this car your daily driver? If so I would go ahead and have the mechanic do it as he is expierenced and will get it done quickly and usually correct the first time. If this is a weekend car or you have another car then I would suggest doing it yourself since you should be able to tackle it yourself...|||An O2 sensor is something you can change with the right tools and a little bit of know how, on the other hand you can cause more damage than it%26#039;s worth because the ones on older cars are very hard to remove sometimes and if you don%26#039;t know what you%26#039;re doing you can mess something else up

How do you change a oxygen sensor in a 99 chevy tahoe?

I have a 99 chevy Tahoe and the sensors are bad I need to change them asap My daughter is coming home tomarrow and I am going to need the truck to pick her up 2 1/2 hours from home please help...|||They just unplug and unscrew, there may be up to four sensors though so make sure to change the right one(s). There is a small tab you push in to unlock the electric connector and they should slide apart. You may need an 02 sensor socket ava at autozone as a lonatool if you cant get a 7/8%26quot; wrench on them.|||Well you said you had 2.5 hrs 3 hours ago but you should also check the connecters you are plugging the new sensors into... %26#039;99 and %26#039;98 had a problem with the connecters and water, look for green stuff and the like. use a little dielct. greese in the new ones.|||depends on what sensor you wanna replace and also just a note only one sensor may go bad and not more than that. If you have say sensor 1 bank 1 and sensor 1 bank 2 going lean then I would check for a fuel pump going bad or a vacuum leak some where because they both never go out at the same time. Same thing if both banks for sensor 2 codes you really need to check the circuit first to see that there is no problems with it. It just may be an intermittant problem. Clear the light and drive around and see if light comes back on with same codes again. If it does have it diagnose and do not assume that just because you have an O2 code that its a bad O2 sensor. If you have a code for all 4 sensors that never happens so you really need to have diagnose for possible faulty ECM. You replace all 4 sensor and 100% sure the light will return for same thing.

What tool to used change oxygen sensor on 1990 Buick lesabare?

crescent or something else?|||u can use a wrench, but your best option would be an O2 sensor socket. this will help prevent stripping the sensor and also protect the wires from damage. should be able to find one at a local parts store.|||An oxygen sensor socket.

Basically, it%26#039;s like a long spark plug socket, but it%26#039;s got a cutout on the side that you slip the wire and connector through so it stays out of the way. Any auto parts store should have the correct one.|||There is an actual socket that has a cutout for the wire...if you cut the wire on the old one..you can use a 13/16 spark plug socket to remove it..you can probably use a box end wrench to reinstall it|||If your going to replace the o2 sensor just cut the wire close to the sensor(its getting replaced anyway)and put the socket on it.|||actually 22mm not 13/16 lmao dnt use sae tools only metric or you will strip it out

also what pressure should I keep the tires?|||When O2 sensors first became common place, manufacturers stated that it was a maintenance item and should be changed every X years or XXX,000 miles/km.

Not many people bothered doing this and guess what...those O2 sensors kept working fine way beyond their supposed expiration dates.

Since the sensors are hooked up to the OBD II system, I would just keep driving on those 02 sensors until the computer detects a fault and gives you code.|||At least once every 60K miles.

Regular 60K mile maintenance schedule.

You don%26#039;t have to do ALL of them. But the timing belt is a MUST. The items with 2 stars (**) are must do items. The items with with one star are %26quot;really should%26quot; items. The rest are optional.

Good Luck...|||every 50,000 tire pressure is marked on the sidewall on the tire|||why would you want to change it. is it broke? ckeck the tire and it will tell you how much air it must have. if it is not broke don%26#039;t fix it.|||Change it when it goes bad. The engine will throw a code when the sensors get out of range.

Ford says at least 32PSI now. 34 is better.|||the oxegen sensors every 50 to 60 thousand. I recomend replacing the fuel filter every 30 thousand because the fuel out there is very dirty other wise the other guys answers were good.|||If your check engine light (MIL) comes on %26amp; the trouble code indicates bad O2, then change it. Replace the O2 sensor(s) when they go bad. No reputable shop changes seneors as part of normal maintenance service. If so, why not coolant temp sensor, oil pressure sensor, tire pressure sensors, mass air flow sensor, input %26amp; output speed sensors, wheel speed sensors(4) %26amp; whatever other sensors the vehicle may have? You should keep the pressure recommended by the tire manufacturer. Being a former Ford tech.,Iwould recommend between 32-35psi. Put 40psi. in the spare, they seem to loose pressure just hanging there.

Is it nessesary to change the oxygen sensor on a 1995 Nissan quest?

I never changed the oxygen sensor before is that bad?|||I see this question asked on here a lot. It makes me wish I worked in a parts house. I would make a fortune selling oxygen sensors.

Actually, you asked a very good question. Years ago (25 years plus) when oxygen sensors were first used regularly on vehicles, there was a suggested replacement mileage of about 75,000 miles. A little flag would come up on some instrument clusters that said %26quot;sensor%26quot; indicating the Oxygen sensor should be replaced.

This was because the ECM used at that time had no real logic to alert a customer when the oxygen sensor had failed. It was a safe bet to replace them at a given mileage as a means to make sure it was still good at high mileage.

Today%26#039;s vehicles are equipped with good logic not only to turn on a check engine light, they can also capture the data to indicate what kind of failure has occurred. There are several types of oxygen sensor failures: Lean biased, rich biased, fixed center, internal heated failure are some examples of failures that can occur.

The oxygen sensor on your Quest may never fail for the life of the vehicle. Or it could fail tomorrow. In any case there is no reason to replace it until then.|||Yes it is|||If you need an O2 sensor you will get a check engine light. If there%26#039;s no light there%26#039;s no sense in replacing it.

How do I change my oxygen sensor in my 2000 Honda Prelude ?

Once I find out which oxygen sensor is bad, I want to try and replace it myself because the dealers won%26#039;t to charge $500 for the part and the manual labor. The part only cost $70 and I%26#039;ve got time. What tools should I buy to change out the sensor? Pictures or a video would be helpful.|||THE TOOL NEEDED WILL BE A 13/16 SOCKET WITH A CUT DOWN THE SIDE FOR THE WIRES SO THAT YOU DON%26#039;T BREAK THEM AND THE FREE PICTURES WILL BE A YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY.

GOOD LUCK|||you need to buy the correct 13.16%26quot; socket for removing and installing a 02 sensor

Location & how to change O2 Oxygen sensors on Infinity I30 99?

Getting check engine light and idles up and down on a complete stop.|||I assume you%26#039;ve already gone somewhere to find out exactly what code is coming up for the Check Engine light to know for sure that it%26#039;s the O2 sensors and not something else tripping the Check Engine light? If not, Autozone and other autoparts stores can read the codes for free and tell you what%26#039;s wrong specifically to keep you from throwing unecessary parts (and money) at the problem.

If you%26#039;re sure it%26#039;s the O2 sensors, they should be located in front of and behind the catalytic converter in the exhaust piping. Most of the time they just unscrew from the exhaust pipe, you disconnect the wire going to them, and replace with the new sensor and reinstall.

You may have to disconnect the battery for ~15 minutes after installing the new sensors (to clear the Check Engine light)...or the light may just turn off by itself after the bad sensors are replaced and the car is re-started. If the light still stays on after replacing the sensors and disconnecting the battery, go back to Autozone and they can reset the light with the same tool they use to read the codes.

|||I am not sure if that would be o2sensor sounds like TPS( throttle position sensor) controls your idle, get the code check engine light diagnosed.

How to change Oxygen Sensor for Mazda 626?

I%26#039;m trying to change the oxygen sensor for my Mazda 626. However, it%26#039;s so difficult for me to unplug the old one. I couldn%26#039;t get the stock wiring part off from the wire connector. Is there any tricks for me to unplug?

Thanks for your advice!|||There should be one or 2 locking tabs squeeze or separate the tabs (be careful they are usually brittle) and GENTLY work out the connection with a small screwdriver. when you install your new sensor be sure not to touch the probe. the oil on your fingers can ruin it.

How to change oxygen sensors on a 1996 corvette ?

take it to someone who does it all the time, most cars I%26#039;ve ever worked on had them in very inconvenient places.|||Buy new ones ($20 each) from the autoparts shop and remove the old one with a crescent wrench.

Cut the plug off the old one, strip the wire, crimp it onto the new sensors wire.

Re-attach.

The sensors are located on the exhaust pipes near the engine.

How difficult is it to change the oxygen sensors on my chevy silverado?

usually not too bad. THere are a couple of choices when replacing. You can get a universal fit or a OEM. Either way, I would invest in a O2 sensor socket, but a wrench works fine.|||Warm the motor to normal running temp spray some pb buster at the threads and remove the sensor. as the previous man said I would purchase the socket if possible but a wrench should work. one quick question for you, did they inform you it was bad at a smog shop? anyway contact me at www.mycarandineedhelp.com its a free service I do |||Easy task. Unplug sensor, unscrew old one, install new one, plug it in.

It really isn%26#039;t much worse than that! If you don%26#039;t get an OEM replacement, you may have some simple wiring involved (instructions included) and if you can read then you can figure it out.

The hardest thing would be dealing with a froze sensor that you cannot get out of the pipe. Spray some pentrating oil on the sensor a few minutes before you plan on removing them to help.|||Odds are that you don%26#039;t need to.

But, I assume you got a trouble code for slow switching sensors and not a rich/lean code.

How much would my gas millage improve if i changed my oxygen sensors?

I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9l Engine|||i heard like 100miles but i think its way off|||Hmmm, probably not a lot... 1 mpg maybe.|||not much , maybe 1.5mpg|||i think it would but you would needto ask auto zone|||That depends upon how old and crapy your current O2 sensors are. Oxygen sensors can be expensive, and that would certainly outweigh the savings on gas, I would imagine. Sell the gas guzzler and get something more practical.|||The o2 sensors control fuel injection on a small scale. It will help if you need them. If your vehicle is bucking and running rough then you may need to change them. If your vehicle isn%26#039;t then it won%26#039;t change fuel consumption much. I got great results on my 97 dakota by changing the fuel injectors and fuel rail. Vehicle drove sweet after that.|||it depends on how bad it is.

if it is lazy it will effect fuel delievery.

dodge%26#039;s have not been known for their good gas milage, but if its got over 60k on it, then a new o2 sensor upstream will definately make a difference.

make sure you readapt the fuel memory.|||Check with your mechanic. most likely you need a good tune up. Replace your spark plug wires, they are made of carbon, and most likely have cracks. Now the oxygen sensors have more to do with pollution control, and how rich/lean the mix has to burn evenly until your truck warms up, or when you accelarate. I%26#039;d more worried about your valves and your fuel injectors, excessive carbon buildup and your valves will allow a rich mixture to escape before burning evenly. And dirty inkectors will cause some fuel to evaporate on the engine rather than in it. Look at these things first. they will be less costly and save a good deal of fuel.

Will changing my oxygen sensor make a difference considering it doesnt seem like its being read anyway?

1990 Mazda RX-7. Been trying to find out why I%26#039;m getting such bad mpg... Unplugged the oxygen sensor but it didnt even give me a %26quot;check engine%26quot; light unplugged (works with the key on, drove around with it unplugged... still no %26quot;check engine%26quot; light)... If I change my oxygen sensor, will the car recognize and use the new readings from the oxygen sensor?|||the o2 sensor tells the computer to regulate the amout of fuel the cyl gets by reading if its running rich or lean, this is the reason that ur mileage is so poor, because the injoctors are probably just putting out alot of gas since they dont know what to do|||Back then. the O2 sensor indicator was usually mileage triggered. You should not necessarily get a light in your car.

I know my 1993 Isuzu truck was set to trip that light every 90K miles and I had to swap a screw int eh gauge cluster to turn it off.

Also, ALDL and OBD1 are much more tolerant/lazy when it comes to emissions issues.

Where are the Oxygen Sensors located on my 97 Dodge Neon? How do I replace them?

My check engine light went on so I got it checked @ an auto parts store. The results said that I need to change my Oxygen Sensor. I know there are two, but the location was not specified in the print out; I thought I would start with the top one, since it is easier to get to. Does someone know the tools required to do this and how I access and replace the Oxygen Sensor? Thank you!|||if it has 2 there will be one on each side screwed into the exhaust most are just before it curves under the car it just screws in most use a 22 mm socket or a box end wrench they may need some lubricant to help break them lose they will be tight this car may only have one look at both sides of exhaust it will be before the converter not behind it|||Oxygen sensors are usually in the exhaust manifold.. I think they just unscrew with a pliers or possibly a socket.

Check with your local library you can probably find a chilton%26#039;s book that would give you all the instructions you need to replace it. That way you wouldn%26#039;t have to buy the book.|||O2 sensor is usually mounted on your exhasut manifold or right before your catalitic converter. If you look under the car you will see it screwed into the muffler pipe right after where it merges into one. Either that or it will be in the manifold next to the engine.

What is the role of oxygen sensors in a vehicle?

I think I have to change the oxygen sensor on my BMW. Problem is i don%26#039;t know exactly what they do. In cold mornings the RPM keeps fluctuating and is very low, when it gets under 500 RPM, of course it stops. Someone told me the oxygen sensor might be the problem, not sure though. Thanks|||I doubt it. Depending on what year model it is..most O2 sensors do not start working until they reach roughly 600F. When they are hot enough then they send information back to the computer about the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream. The computer then makes adjustments to run the car rich and lean to provide the needed %26quot;fuel%26quot; for the catalytic converter to burn up the excess hydrocarbons in the exhaust. I would think your problem either to be a idle air control motor malfunction or perhaps your intake air temp or coolant temp sensor is not functioning properly. Your best bet is to take it to shop to have it diagnosed because you can throw a lot of money at it without fixing the problem..|||The oxygen sensor on your car does exactly what the name implies: The oxygen sensor tests the exhaust gasses and determines how much residual oxygen is in the exhaust. By crunching some numbers, the computer then determines what the air/fuel ratio actually is based on what the oxygen sensor tells it. Pretty nifty, huh? Also called the O2 sensor, the oxygen sensor is a critical component in your fuel injection system. If your oxygen sensor isn鈥檛 operating properly, your computer doesn鈥檛 know the rate at which to inject additional gasoline. The end result is that a fouled oxygen sensor causes the engine to run rich, which can then lead to catalytic converter failure.|||o2 sensors monitor the exhaust gases allowing the computer to adjust the air and fuel mixture. If you have problems witha fluctuating and low idle in the morning, have the idle air control valve checked and have the throttle body cleaned out. A bad o2 sensor should not cause low or fluctuating idle.

good luck|||I agree with the inital diagnosis, but further inspection would need to be done. An oxygen sensor is wired to your computer and it regulates your air/fuel ratio according to exhaust conditions. Also a secondary oxygen sensor is usually located after the catalytic converter to monitor your emissions. I would venture a guess that your primary O2 sensor (likely located on or near the header/exhaust manifold) is the culprit for your issue. I don%26#039;t reccomend any %26quot;quick fixes%26quot; but I%26#039;d first check for proper connection and then consider swapping it out for a new one.|||I monitors the amount of unburned fuel/oxygen and adjusts the amount of fuel being injected could also be the mass airflow sensor usually located on the intake tube running from the air filter to the intake with the car running unplug it if no change thats it. hope I could help|||Air C is correct. The O2 sensors on your vehicle are not controlling fuel at cold startup, and do not operate until they have heated to the proper temperature. You have an intake air control problem or possible vacuum leak.|||I have an AUDI A4... and I thought it was the O2 sensor as well... same with the dealership. I spend a bundle on getting it replaced and it didn%26#039;t help at all. O2 sensors determine the proper amount of air to mix with the fuel... and so it possibly might be the sensor. What worked for my car... fuel injector replacement.|||It doesn%26#039;t have anything to do with your O2 sensor. Sounds to me that your idle control valve is going. What this does is controls the automatic choke (holds the throttle open) and when it doesn%26#039;t operate correctly the car won%26#039;t idle properly.|||Others have described what an oxygen sensor does.

Why not take your car to a BMW dealer or independent German car service shop and pay for a diagnosis-only? Or buy a diagnostic code tool and find out what codes are being displayed, then change the part indicated.

I bought a combo oil service and scan code display tool (R5/FCX-II ) from Peake Research for about $150 and it does a good job for both.

How necessary is changing the oxygen sensor in my BMW?

My service engine light came on today and I plugged my scanner in. It said that the oxygen sensor needs replacement and I was wondering how urgent that is. The car is running just fine but will it eventually lead to some other defect? Is it important that I get it replaced immediately?|||Replacing the O2 senor is very important and can lead to other problems if not fixed. It regulates the air fuel mixture in your car and can waste gas. Also, just because it says the sensor is bad sometimes the light can come on for other reasons other then the sensor. A broken vacuum hose or a small leak in the injector can make this light come on as well.|||it is very important. Is you car idling? It is also important since BMW%26#039;s cost a lot of money but don%26#039;t last. Should of got an Acura. :) Think NSX if you want to go for the bucks

Trouble with oxygen sensor in Hyundai right after changing the timing belt.?

Right after having my timing belt changed in my 2001 Hyundai Elantra, the check engine light came on. A diagnostic says that it is the Oxygen sensor 2 in bank 1.

It seems wierd to me that this code would come on right after the timing belt was changed. I suspect that my mechanic likely did something wrong that made that code flip. Is it possible that he got the timing off just a little bit that brings less oxygen in? Could he have disconnected the sensor when changing the belt? Or could it just be a coincidence that the sensor went bad when my mechanic changed the timing belt?

My mechanic says he did nothing wrong and wants to charge me to change the oxygen sensor. What do you think the problem is with the car? What should I do?|||im not sure if the o2 needs to be disconnected to remove the timming belt covers. if he%26#039;s so sure he didn%26#039;t cause the problem i would assume he probably knows that he didn%26#039;t ever disconnect it. have you looked to see if it is disconnected? sensor 2 is the one behind the catalytic converter..it%26#039;s only job is to make sure the catalyst is working. you didn%26#039;t say anything about it running roughly so i would think the valve timing is how it%26#039;s sopposed to be. if the timing was off you would have position sensor codes or maybe misfires.

wasn%26#039;t there more to the code then just %26quot;sensor 2 bank 1?%26quot; how many miles are on the car? o2 sensors do go bad sometime|||Well, likely intake cam is off 1 tooth. Unless he forgot to plug it back in. You could let him change the OX sensor with the understanding that if doesn%26#039;t work he will replace it with your old one,no charge. Should be able to do this while you wait.|||try and reset the computor by undoing the positive side cable of the battery and hooking it back up this will erase and reset codes but more than likely your timing is off a hair you probably have 2 O2 sensors one the ex, manifold and the other down by the catalist converter

I have a 02 Intrepid SXT and I changed my oxygen sensors and now my car is stalling ? My oil was very low to.?

Why is this happening? Is the problem my oil needing to be changed because I am over the 3000 mile mark times 2 and now my car is starting to sputter and stall. Anything special I need to do and does this have anything to do with my oxygen sensors ?|||Oil doesn%26#039;t have anything to do with it. The 02 sensors normally won%26#039;t cause this. Did anything get disconnected while changing the sensors?

Is changing an oxygen sensor a big repair, on a Hyundai?

The people I am thinking about buying the car off of said they can%26#039;t get one of the oxygen sensors off to replace it. They did 1 , and there is still another. This is an 03 Sonata.

Tell me what you think. They are selling it for 1100 obo.

Is this something a mechanic at a shop should be able to do easily enough?

Thanks|||On my 1990 Geo Metro, there are 2 sensors, one on the front of the engine right on the exhaust manifold, the other down and under in back on the exhaust header where it meets the tailpipe. The back sensor requires the car to be on a lift to get to the sensor. It MAY be they were just lazy and did not swap out the back sensor. More likely, there is something else wrong and using the back sensor claiming it is too hard to reach as an excuse which covers the problem. You need to do MORE investigation here. Take the car to a mechanic, and lay out what you have been told. A reputable mechanic will TELL you of potential problems and what they MIGHT be covering up using the sensor as an excuse. The mechanic has nothing to gain or lose by telling the truth. He gets paid for his time either way, good or bad results so there is no incentive to lie unless you have told him he is getting your business in advance of his results.|||O2 sensors are usually located on the exhaust manifold. If the car is a transverse (side) mounted 6 cylinder motor, they probably changed the easy to reach front sensor. The other O2 sensor is on the back manifold and you may need to raise the car on a lift and reach it from the bottom. Changing the O2 sensors is a relatively minor repair, just difficult to reach.|||Not only should it be fairly easy for a mechanic, it%26#039;s a common repair, and they should have a set cost for it, just like an oil change or brake pad replacement. Just call your dealer, and they%26#039;ll give you a price.|||its not easy for us !

who is mechanic and trained can do easily!

I have 2000 durango change oxygen sensors but still runs ruough?

after changing the sparkplugs and oxygen sensor on my van, it still starts cutting out at around 45mph, what can cause that? Could it be the catalytic converter?|||Check if you gapped the plugs correctly. Also make sure that you didn%26#039;t put the wrong wire on the wrong plug

Is there a website that gives locations of oxygen sensors on a 2004 Hyundai Sonata?

I%26#039;m changing oxygen sensor 1 in Bank 1 on my 2004 Hyundai Sonata. I know it is before the catalytic converter, but I%26#039;m not sure which side it%26#039;s on. Thanx!|||You may get the info you need on this site

Haven%26#039;t been on it in a while but I think it may have diagrams and such.

How do you change oxygen sensors on a 95 lincoln continental? And where can I get some at a good price?

The service engine light is on and the diagnostic came back with the sensors as the reason for the light being on. Car runs great, no real obvious signs of something wrong.|||On a car this old, the sensors may indeed need replacement; that said, there are other things that can lead the computer to declare them inactive or out of range. Things like fuel filter, fuel pump, and fuel regulator to name just three.

As to the cost, there are some pretty good after-market replacements, but they are nearly as expensive as those from Ford (~$80.00 ea.).

There are two sensors, and it is not a tecchnical issue to change them, but it is a mechanical nightmare on one of them as it is very difficult to reach.

You do need either a 7/8%26quot; box style wrench, or a sensor socket from your parts house. An inexpensive socket can be purchased for less than $30.00, but be warned, an CHEAP socket can be expensive if it will not retain the shoulders of the sensor. If it spreads, it will damage the sensor, possibly making it nearly impossible for YOU to remove.

When you install the new unit, be sure that you do NOT overtighten the new sensor, as you can damage it, and not see tha damage. Tighten it no more than you would a spark plug.

TIP---To avoid burns, wait for at least 1-1/2 hours after driving before trying to replace them. Exhaust pipes are very hot for quite a while after the engine has been shut off.|||There should be two sensors on that car. You need an oxygen sensor wrench for that car and you can usually get on at the friendly auto parts store. They cost about sixty bucks apiece, but are a heck of a lot cheaper than the gas you%26#039;ll waste if you don%26#039;t.|||You don%26#039;t necessarily need oxygen sensors just because the code came up. You could have another problem causing them to read out of range. Or a bad Catalytic converter. Before you replace the sensors take it to a Ford/Lincoln Dealer and have them diagnose it for you. If it does need sensors buy them at the dealer. The aftermarket ones are typically not very good.
