Acura rsx oxygen sensor where?

i need to change my 02 acura rsx oxygen sensor but looking in the engine and cant find it? dont want to take it to a mechanic because they expensive and i know it is a simple task, but need to located first...can anyone direct me where to find it? thankx

There are multiple sensors. %26quot;Bank 1 Sensor 1%26quot; is located in the front of the car, screwed into the exhaust manifold. The two sensors for bank 2 are located, as previously mentioned, along the catalytic converter. Go to any auto parts store and check your code and send it to me to verify, as many technicians will recommend an oxygen sensor when the sensor is actually throwing a code for something else. If it is an oxygen sensor, make sure you get an %26quot;oxygen sensor socket%26quot; from an auto parts store.

If it's the secondary sensor it will be located on the cat. Look at the exhaust. Be careful taking it off, they can be very stubborn.

My check engine light was on and was an o2 sensor before the catalyst code. I changed the o2 sensor and it came back on after about 3 drives. I replaced the o2 sensor again thinking it may have been a bad one and again the check engine light come back on indicating the same problem. What else could this be?

i own a repair shop,,and after you replace the sensor you have to erase the trouble code from it,,or it will come back every time,,and if it has more than one sensor it may need more than one replaced on it,most cars now have to,,an updraft,and a down draft on them,,good luck,but remember ,it has to be erased from it,,good luck with it i hope this help,s.
i think some cars have more than 1 oxygen sensor. maybe there is another one that is bad?
On this stuff you can not just replace parts. You need to make sure the other sensors and controls are working right. Without knowing the type of car you drive hard to help you.Is the wiring from the sensor to the computer good . It could be the injector dripping and the computer can not lean out the mixture enough. This cause a false O2 sensor code. Could be lots of other stuff to. Fuel pressure to high or low , map or maf sensor out of cal. Tough to give you an answer with so little info
Is it on a chevy truck? One thing you want to watch out for, is if you have an exhaust leak, ahead of the o2 sensor. That will cause the light to come on again. depending on what kind of vehicle it is. could be the coolant temperature sensor.
there are actually a few differnt things that can cause a o2 code. It could be as simple as an air filter, also check the wiring harness to the o2 sensor. could be corroded and or broken. May also be another o2 sensor... some vehicles have 2 or 4... left and right bank before and after, make sure you changed the right one. You could also have a bad cat. converter. Also if you don't have the equipment to reset the codes drive cycles will restet codes if the proper repairs were made. With new inspection procedures her in NY and in many other states it is not recomended to reset codes as drive cycles can be more than 100 miles in some cases...
Sounds like you something else may be triggering the light. Vaccuum leaks cause a lean O2 code. So do bad fuel pumps and dirty MAF sensors. Whereas a bad fuel pressure regulator can cause a rich O2 code, but worn spark plugs or a missfire due to bad wires can as well. Parts stores read trouble codes for free because they want to sell you parts, but you need some good ole fashion diagnosis on this one.
Agree with Vonnie C. It's situations like this that expose why you get what you pay for with a %26quot;free%26quot; code reading at the parts store. More often than not an O2 sensor code does not mean the sensor has to be replaced. There is a long list of tests that have to be run to determine what caused the code to be triggered. Depending on the make/model/year of vehicle there coudl be dozens of different tests and checks required to determine the cause. Your issue requires a real mechanic with real diagnostic tools and expertise. That's why they make the big bucks.

2000 Toyota Corolla - Catalytic Converter? Oxygen Sensor? Help!?

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla with 125K miles on it. Within the last month, the Check Engine light has appeared. I had it diagnosed at a shop and the computer said the Oxygen Sensor and Catalytic Converter needed to be replaced and it would cost about $500. I have since taken it to a different shop, paid $260 to have the Oxygen Sensor replaced, but the light returned again after four days. When I called back, he said it probably wasn't the right %26quot;code%26quot; because Toyotas built within the last ten years don't normally have to have the Catalytic Converter replaced. Despite the fact that I work in IT, I can't comprehend that by changing a car part that is either dirty or damaged, the Check Engine light should not come back on after only four days if the car part is brand new. Now, I assume I'll have no choice but to take it to a shop, pay another $200 to replace the converter and then pray that the light does not return. Any thoughts or recomedations?

get someone else to take a scan tool to it, someone who knows how to read them. the other guy probably didnt take the time to find out what to code meant and just went by what the scan tool said, those do not tell you where exactly the problem is but is a reference tool that tells you which area should be carefully looked at. I dont even think they can tell you if your catalytic converter is bad - that does not have a sensor that the computer reads, plus there are 2 O2 sensor maybe more, he coulda changed the wrong one, some are scammers you should know that!

That guy is ripping you off and incompetent to boot. There's no such thing as a cat that's never supposed to be replaced, especially at that age, and $260 for an O2 sensor is insane. A bad cat can be the cause of your O2 sensor code.
Andy W- Where do you come up these things, and how did you get so many best answers? Have you ever bought an oxygen sensor before? An O.E. Denso cost $264.99 from AutoZone. $122.00 from Napa. How can you say the mechanic did the right thing? He should have diagnosed the catalyst efficiency with a pyrometer and verified with a gas analyzer.

Or do they still just bang on it with a hammer where you come from.

if i were you, i would never go back to the mechanic that charged you $260 for an o2 sensor replacement. They are a $50 part, and they take less then 5 minutes to change. If you have a wrench (sometimes you need a propane torch) you can change the 02 sensors.

But anyways, heres the deal, when the code for the 02 sensors shows up, it just gives you a general idea of the problem. You have an 02 sensor after the cat, and im positive that is what was replaced. The faulty 02 sensor can be caused by a faulty cat, and thats exactly the problem youre having.

The mechanic did the correct thing. He replaced the cheapest part first. He cleared the codes, and everything was fine, now you find that a faulty cat is causing the same code... This mechanic was honest in the fact that he only tried screwing you on the labor, and not the original problem.

Cat convertors fail all the time...it doesnt matter how old the car is, it will happen.

$200 for a cat is a bit high, but if that includes labor, thats about normal. cats are expensive. Im sure your toyota dealer would be charging $300+ for the part alone.

But like i said, i wouldnt be using that mechanic again. $260 for an 02 sensor is nuts.

I had to move the air induction system to get to the distributor and once i put it back together, now the fuel injection is screwed. it floods itself out and when it does run, it jerks and backfires violently. could this be oxygen sensor? I smell the gas from being flooded. Any ideas?

sounds like you got a plug wire crossed check your firing order then trace your plug wires and make sure the firing order is correct

take it to a pro/its something you did and without looking at it its just hit or miss with your wallet

Your car runs like crap. The oxygen sensors are the whole basis of what controls your air/fuel ratio, which is what keeps the car running properly. If there were no oxygen sensors there wouldn't be modern fuel injection, we'd still be using carburators. It's the #1 single most important sensor. As they wear, they begin to switch from lean/rich slowly, and your car will do the same, and it's performance will become very sluggish. Eventually it'll get so bad that it stalls, fails emissions, cats get clogged, and overall the car just runs like junk.
Ok your car will run rich which will use more gas. The catlytic converter might get clogged because of too many carbon gases. It will have poor performance, fuel might come out the exhaust pipe or clogg your cat. converter. It will also stall because of the wrong air fuel ratio. But if that fails you still have mass airflow sensor which will be controlling the amount of fuel going in, but then your cat might get clogged because of gases and fuel. The O2 sensor generates a voltage and the computer reads it and adjusts the air fuel ratio using input from O2 sensor and mass air flow sensor if O2 sensor fails yo will have bad emissions.
Check engine light would turn on. Rest is depends on which O2 sensor. Typical OBD 2 cars have two O2 sensors. One in the front of the catalytic converter measures the engine combustion quality. The other one, after the catalytic converter would measure the air after the cat filtering- purpose of it is to detect the catalytic converter problem. O2 after cat can be ignored until the check engine light goes on (and replace it when it does) However, the one before the cat, when not changed in time, can damage the CAT. And if this O2 sensor give you the check engine light, it does NOT necessarily means the O2 sensor is bad. It means that engine combustion quality is bad, and O2 sensor is detecting the unburned fuel going out of exhaust.



Generally, you would want to change O2 sensors in every 60K for older cars, and 100K for new.

    I had posted before about changing my O2 sensor on a 97 Subaru Legacy wagon with an OEM sensor and the check engine light came back. I received great responses (Thanks : ) One of them was to multi meter the wire coming from the engine side of the bank one sensor two oxygen sensor which sits right on the catalytic converter. I multi metered the wire using a positive and the negative with the ignition on engine off. There where three wires, two positive and one negative. I got a 10 ohm reading from one positive and no pulse from the other. Could this be the problem?

    You have few (possible) problem. You'll only get a reading when (a) the engine is running (b) O2 sensor is warmed up.



    The only last problem is that digital multimeter (DMM) are often TOO SLOW to respond for you read the value. Some non-auto-ranging meters are little bit faster but by not much.



    Some DMM have %26quot;bar graph%26quot; on top that can move as fast the pulse (even if the digital readout is still hunting). There are few LED bar-graph O2 (or exhaust gas oxygen - EGO) meter you can hook up. They are little more than 0-1 volt meter. But they react very quickly.

    Another thing is that you want to be reading the VOLTage not the resistance (ohm). When the engine is running at stoichiometry (14.7 : 1 - perfect air to fuel ratio) the voltage should be near 0.45. But in practice it should bounce little bit above and below that (about 3 to 10 times per second). But that's only during idle or cruise. At wide open throttle (WOT) the engine ignores the O2 sensor and just dumps fuel (at something like 12:1 A/F ration).

    Hey thanks everyone for dissing this guy's truck, way to be helpful. But anyway you said that it doesnt have enough spark and the plugs and wires were changed, but how are the distributor cap, rotor, and even the coil doing? Those would be my next guess, also check for condensation inside your distributor cap, that can be solved by spraying starting fluid inside that cap and let it sit for about 10 minutes or so.

    You didn't say what year it is but there must be a way to idle it uo a little higher. Leave it in %26quot;P%26quot; and get it up to around 800 RPM.

    Don't just start replacing items. If the O2 sensor is bad, it will limit the amount of fuel, not the spark. If there truly isn't enough spark, the problem will lie with what causes the spark, i.e. the ignition coil, or coil packs. (I am not familiar with what is on your vehicle). I would check the throttle position sensor, since when you stop, you should be at idle, and if your TPS isn't adjusted properly, it will halp cause a stall. Take it to the dealer rather than a %26quot;shop%26quot;, and they might also have a better idea than a general mechanic. Good luck.
    Its your IAC (Idle air control) valve, It should be located near your throttle body.. Check it to see if its dirty. If it is, replace the whole thing (60 bucks). When these go bad, cars will die at idle.

    I had my car checked out yesterday and the mechanic told me the check engine light was on because of the front oxygen sensor. I am waiting for them to order the new part to get it fixed, which will be a few days.



    I usually only drive my car 30 min at time, but today I drove for like an hour and a half and I noticed faint smells of gas coming from my AC. I turned it off for 15 min and turned it back on and it was ok. Can this be caused by my bad oxygen sensor?

    It can, your computer may be compensating for the reading it's getting from the o2 sensor by adjusting the air/fuel mixture. This could cause your engine to run rich and the excess fumes are coming through the air box. Could also be your o2 sensor is correct and something is causing your car to run rich which your sensor is detecting. Your mechanic may be right but it's probably worth getting a 2nd opinion

    '02 Ford Focus, stuttering and then stalling out.?

    On a recent trip to Florida we had the experience of our Ford Focus stuttering and then stalling out. We would have to pull over to the edge of the highway, wait for about 10 minutes and then could start it up and drive again for a couple hundred miles. As soon as we got to our destination, we took it to a mechanic that could not find anything wrong with it. We drove home after our weeks vacations after driving it through-out the vacation without any problems. It again would stutter and stall out after about 400 miles of driving. We would again wait about 10 minutes and then start it up again to finish the days driving. We have had suggestions ranging from the recent water being added to gas, to bad fuel pump, fuel filter needing changing, Oxygen sensor in fuel line gone bad, or just basically the car not being used to driving on long distance trips. Any suggestions?? Our mechanics are baffled.

    OK. FORD FOCUS had issues with fuel pumps, specially when they got less than a half of tank they shut themselves out . What u can do is call a dealer and tell them you have that problem and tell them that if they can check if there are any recalls that apply to your car(have the VIN number ready).just in case they ask you.



    Try to do that first and see if helps. By the way, If the recall applies to you, you should not be charge. Good luck

    If the code was given from auto zone, they only use a handheld machine. Take it to a Honda garage and let them put it on the big machine to find out for sure.

    okay I took your advice yahoo answerers lol. I got my car diagnosed by a real mechanic and he said it was the oxygen sensor I asked what one of 4 was it and hee said it was the upstream and something about 4th block or something to that nature. he said essentially it was the driver side beofre the catalytic converter and after the block. the easy one tog et too lol.. so I took the car bought an o2 sensor and changed it. the car seems to be better at acceleration but it is still idling hard and shaking in idle it is idling like a big block lol.. . just as it was before this change. there isnt a significant change what so ever. anyone know what the heck the upstream 4th block or whatever means?? did I change the right one or was he Blowing smoke up my butt? any help would be greatlyappreciated if you have more questions that need to be answered please email me at whelchel77@yahoo.com thnkas

    I assume you mean bank 1 or 2 sensor 1. Bank one would be the side on a V motor that cylinder 1 is on and bank 2 is the opposite side. Sensor 1 is in front of the catalytic converter 2 is behind it. As far as the car running rough it could be running rich or lean which could cause your O2 code if the sensor was covered in black soot there's a good possibility it's running rich. The oxygen sensor usually doesn't affect the running of the car too much unless it's really wacked out. there's probably something else causing the running problem.

    I would take it back, if he diagnosed that as the problem, and it isn't better, he should look at it again, no charge. You did pay him to diagnose the problem, and if it's still having the same problem, he has an obligation to look at it again and verify that the o2 sensor problem is fixed, and whatever problem you have now is elsewhere.



    I agree that you should have had the shop complete the work, but either way, you paid for the diagnosis and if it wasn't correct he needs to look at it again, or refund the money for the diagnostic time.



    It's possible that you have other problems besides the o2 sensor, so take it back and have him take another look at it. Have him check and see what difference changing that o2 sensor made.



    If it did make a difference, and you have other issues, you might need to pay more for diagnosis, it just depends on what he charged you for the first time. Sometimes it's a step by step thing. You take care of the obvious things first, and then look again. Additional problems would require additional time to diagnose.
    Why didn't you have the mechanic do it? That way if it didn't fix it, he'd find out what was going on while it was there. Now he'll probably charge you more. And I don't know what a 4th block upstream thingy is. Take it back and have him fix it for you.

    If you had already changed the O2 sensors, then there is no need to change them again. When it states that catalyst is below threshold, it usually means that the cat, is not working like it should. How many miles are on your ride? If allot, like well over 100,000, then maybe its due for another cat then.

    Disconnect negative on battery, turn lights on for one minute, turn off lights reconnect battery, turn key to on ( not start) let set three minutes, can now start dodge without light,

    you can try disconnecting the battery (-) for about 30 sec. and give that a try. if that doesn't work you might have to pull in to a shop and get them to clear it for you. good luck.

    yes, you will need an oxygen sensor wrench. It is essentially the box end of a combination wrench that fits on a 3/8%26quot; socket drive. to change an oxygen sensor you need to disconnect the connector for the sensor then put the wire through the box end of the tool, then move the business end of the O2 wrench down and onto the sensor. the sensor comes out of the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe in the same way you would unbolt a regular bolt.



    There are at least two and possibly three oxygen sensors on your car. If you were told you need an oxygen sensor, you'll need to find out which one before you go changing them. You have at least a front heated 02 sensor bank 1 and a rear heated oxygen sensor. If the car is a v-6 you will also have a front heated oxygen sensor bank 2. be sure you change the one that's bad!



    you can buy the oxygen sensor wrenches in most parts stores.

    you can use a 7/8 wrench for the easy sensor, plus there is a socket with a slot cut out so it doesn't damage the wires..
    there is a special socket made just for oxygen sensors. depending on which sensor has gone bad is the deciding factor if your even going to be able to use that at all. is it and upstream O2 sensor or downstream sensor. Ford made some of there cars a real pain to remove the sensors on in the back of the engine bay. on those you end up using a 7/8's open end wrench or the metric equivelent to get to it. the chances of bloody knuckles are good in that case too. to replace it just find which one it is that is bad then track down the proper connection and disconnect it. take either your sensor socket or wrench depending on location and unscrew it from the pipe, reverse process for installation. good luck
    just couple of wrenchs and good ol' WD40 spray... do it when its cold.. (be sure to use correctly gapped wrench..avoid those adjustable one) somtimes it really a frustrating job to do when it comes with 'aged' cars..

    the obd II code p1345 KEEPS poppin up saying i needed to fix the o2 sensors. I just changed oxygen sensors on my truck but i was told by one mechanic that there 3 o2 sensors. the code still on so i took it to another mechanic he said that there is another sensor that i missed.

    Can some plz tell me how many sensor there really are an where they are located? I had the front 2 changed and one on the passanger side behind the catalyic converter. I can't seem to located the another one.

    I checked my shop manual and the proper code identification for a P1345 is %26quot;Crankshaft position sensor / Camshaft position sensor correlation%26quot;. Same code for both and it either is malfunctioning or needs adjustment

    your o2 sensors might be going off if the car is running rich or lean also your cat could be getting clogged
    There are 4 O2 sensors; 2 per cylinder bank (left/right). There is a sensor located in front of and behind each catalytic converter for each side.



    As kawasaki said, a p1345 is a crankshaft/camshaft position sensor code.

    i have a 98 jeep grand cherokee laredo. my engine is a v6 4 liter. i got a code that said my oxygen sensor was bad bank one sensor two. it said the voltage was too high for operating conditions. i havent changed it yet i also had a bad camshaft pos. sensor and after i changed that my check engine light went off. it seemed like it was running ok after changing the cam pos sensor. but today when i was driving it i was going 55mph and it felt like my engine was getting ready to cut off and it kind of bucked and jerked while i was driving it and it ran rough. it did it for about a min and then stopped and went back to normal. i was wondering if it was something more serious than the o2 sensor.

    If it did that while driving, then your Check Engine light should have come back on. If it is, the best thing to do would be to scan it. Other than that, it sounds like it could be a clogged Catalytic Converter. Sometimes something gets knocked loose inside and clogs it up. But scan the ECM first if the light is on.

    I would have it diagnostic checked. Autozone will check it for you for free and give you a print out of the specific parts you will need for the repair. Most mechanic shops charge $50~$75 bucks to do the same thing. I wouldn't advise changing parts to try to chase down the problem as that can get very expensive very quickly.     Start by letting the engine idle for at least 15 seconds.

    For the O2 sensor Drive cycle, you must drive the truck at 40 mph for 5 minutes straight. Fuel level in tank is recommended to be between 1/2 and 3/4 with 3/4 being preferred. O2 sensors DO require a drive Cycle!

    You should be able to get to the upstream O2 sensor. The downstream is behind the Catalytic converter so you will probably have to go under the car. Unless you are very skinny and can slide under the car get some jackstands.

    I drive a 1992 Honda Accord (but have regular maintenance done on it) and whenever I take off, no power is getting to the engine and it putts/jerks like it is out of gas.



    All of a sudden, the car will catch up with itself, the check engine light will come on and everything will go back to normal. Once I park and get out of the car, I can smell some type of smoke but don't see any visual signs of it.



    I just got a tune up and a new Cat and the problem still exists. Can this mean that I need a new O2 Sensor?

    The easiest thing to do is to check the electrical connector to make sure it's tight. Since the catalytic converter was replaced, there's a reasonable chance the O2 sensor was removed and connecter was not plugged in tight when it was reinstalled.



    You can check the sensor with a scanner, but since this is a '92 it probably doesn't work with OBDII scanners.



    If you can take it out, you can inspect it to see if it's clogged or excessively sooty.



    If you have a electrical voltmeter, you can also check it by removing it, put it in a vise, then heating it up with a propane torch. When it gets hot the voltage between the output terminals should be about 1.0 volts. When you take away the torch the voltage will quickly drop to zero.



    Another way to check it is to leave it on the car but put straight pins through the wires so that you can hook up your meter while the sensor is in the engine. It should read about 0.6 volts with the car running.



    One thing you mentioned that could indicate the O2 sensor is that the engine stabilizes after the CEL comes on. That could be happening b/c of the O2 sensor. The computer can run the engine %26quot;open loop%26quot; or %26quot;closed loop%26quot;. Closed loop is when the computer is using the sensor reading to adjust air/fuel mixture. When it's open loop, the sensor output is ignored and the computer uses %26quot;default%26quot; settings.



    The computer might be switching to open loop when the CEL comes on, thereby taking the O2 sensor out of the control loop.



    A new sensor costs ~$75.

    You need to hook it up to a scanner and get the codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Parts stores will sometimes do that for free. It could be water in the fuel, fuel filter or many things so need the code before I can really give any more help. Your car probably has more than one O2 sensor, so that can get expensive and you want to be sure that is the problem.

    The HEGO is the Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen sensor. They screw into the exhaust pipe of the car in front of the catalytic converter, and look like a spark plug with 4 wires coming out of them. They usually go bad some time after 100k miles. If you have the 3.0 Vulcan, you have one HEGO. The 3.8 Essex has two.

    You would be better off taking it to your local auto parts store and have them to run a OBDII scran for you,the usually do this free of charge. There's know way to know which ssenor it i without running a scran first, because most vehicle's have 2 to 4 02 sensors.

    1993 Dodge Caravan 3.0L V6 problem started with blown head gasket. I replaced and torqued head. After assembly and started vehical, it ran like it has a terrble misfire. It ran absolutely great and smooth before all this happened to me. Then a relative told me the intake bolts had to be torequed in sequence to the book. I tore it all apart again to torque the bolts on lower part of the MFI Intake to 15lbs. then realized I did this after the permatex gasket sealer had dried...Do you think this would have made a difference? and The Oxygen Sensor wire was cut when I tried to hack saw the manifold studs off to replace them. So the Oxygen sensor isnt connected, after reading lots of stuff online about Oxygen sensors making cars run rough, and rich, etc. I'm now wondering is the cause of all this the Oxygen Sensor, or the Intake Gaskets being re-tightened after permatex dried overnight? I did spray some WD40 all around the intake seal while running it, and there was no change in idle, as checking for air leaks etc. I know its not a misfire, we timed it correctly, and gave it full tune up as well?

    Your check engine light should be on if the 02 sensor is bad or if you have it unpluged.The 02 sensor will make it run with a miss and it will be running to leanor rich causing it to put out a misfire. Have you try to put the cut wire's back together it might not have shorten the 02 sensor out so you might want to try to wire them back together'
    A compression check rules out head issues. When replacing heads if the alignment pins are not shortened for the thinner shaved head, the head won't seal. It doesnt sound like a intake sealing problem, use a bit of starting fluid instead of the wd. Fix the O2 first some newer cars wouldn't even run like that. Check vacuum lines(egr valve).good luck
    Ya! make sure the Oxygen Sensor is connected properly as this might very well cause the problem.



    If I can remember correctly the test for a leak in the intake manifold is to use gas from an acetylene torch, But I can not remember if the oxygen or acetylene was used. Most any mechanic shop could give you the correct answer to this question. They could check this easily at little or no cost. DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS, but I believe they use the acetylene as it blocks the oxygen that leeks into the system allowing it to smooth out the engine If the WD40 is supposed to do the same thing it may not have a sufficient amount to block all the leaks.



    vacuum leak will also cause a rough running engine so check the hoses and plugs at the vacuum tree as well.

    I don't know what the problem might be, but the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) ignores the HO2 (Heated Oxygen) sensor until three things take place. 1. The HO2 sensor is heated to a certain temperature. 2. A certain time has elapsed. 3. The engine gets to a certain temperature as indicated by the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. I would make sure the spark plug wires are on the correct plugs and that you haven't disconnected any of the other sensor wires. ...Good Luck...

    The $255 sounds right but either could be right depending on where he purchased it and what quality he got. He probably padded the bill some too. Call the dealer for an estimate and call some other repair shops for estimates. Maybe look around for another mechanic. The check engine light could be something else. Look for another shop for a free diagnose and estimate. There are blinking light codes that can tell the problem

    Take it to a shop. My old car had a speedometer problem also. It was a 93 ford tempo and the speedometer broke and it would just stay at 0 the whole time. So i just had to guess the correct speed. I guess I did a good job though because it the speedometer was broken for 6 months and i still drove it around everyday and never got pulled over. You should get it checked out though because it can be dangerous.

    O2 Sensor? Probably NOT the problem.

    People like to blame the O2 sensor for the problem because that's where the computer fault appears.

    However, nine times out of ten, it's not faulty. It is simply reading a condition in the engine that is causing it to send a signal to the computer that there is a fault in the exhaust emissions mixture.

    A fouled spark plug, loose spark plug wire, a vacuum leak, dirty injectors, EGR valve, weak fuel pump, dirty fuel filter, weak ignition coil, plugged air filter, on and on, can all cause the O2 sensor to register a fault code.

    Before you yank the O2 sensor and replace it, check the basics first. Otherwise, you could have wasted time and money on the result, not the cause.

    Oh....you should never need to replace it.

    For what you spent on the o2 sensor, you could have almost paid for a professional shop to PROPERLY diagnose the problem in the first place. I would take it to a shop and have it checked.

    Is the check engine / service engine soon light on? If so, that would be a good place to start your diagnostics. A mass air flow sensor is a possible cause. How old are your plugs and wires?

    Sounds like there may be a fuelling issue here, maybe a weak fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter, or maybe even a faulty coolant temperature sensor.



    I personally would have a fuel pressure test carried out before I did anything else.

    With all due respect, instead of replacing all of these parts on a hunch, the sensors can be read in real time on this vehicle, the fuel pressure is easily tested and finding the real problem is considerably less expensive than randomly replacing parts.

    i have the same problem...the colors that are on the main harness and the colors on the oxygen sensor are different i cant figure out which way the wires go...your gonna have to call a junkyard and get the parts and splice the wires..i dont think any auto parts are going to have it and the dealer will probably be expensive

I would splice much easier,and your are probably going to have to get an oem part eventually, did the scan say both were bad?     There are a total of 4 O2 sensors. There is one on each exhaust manifold right when the %26quot;primary's%26quot; come together. They get in the way when changing the plugs, thats how I know they are there. There are also two more farther down the exhaust pipe. One right before the cat and one right after. They arn't too bad to change. Just unplug it, unscrew it, put in the new one, and plug it back in. You'll just have to jack up the car to get to any of them. Make sure that you know which one is bad before you replace it, because these things aren't cheap.

    Same place it is on any car. There can be up to 4 of them, before (and sometimes after) the catalytic converter(s).



    Unplug the wire, and it screws out. Remember to use anti seize on the new one when you install it.

    IMO,

    1st check to make sure the O2 sensor is not covered by Honda's warranty. Some items that help with the car's emmisions are covered for up to 10 years. Refer to your owner's manual of call a Honda dealer.



    You got a code for a bad O2 sensor but not a location? My Honda is setup the same way and when the code was pulled it was for the top O2 sensor. You may wish to recheck the code.



    The trouble code is not the same as a part number so having the code, other than knowing it's for a faulty O2 sensor will not help when getting a replacement.



    Typically it's the upper O2 sensor but that is not a rule.

    Bosch makes a great O2 sensor and is a bit less expensive than OEM from the dealer.



    Once you have changed the O2 sensor, disconnect the negative battery terminal to clear the trouble codes from the on-board system for about 1 minute and then reconnect. The code should then be cleared.

    It's #16 on the bottom left corner of the page. It's located right after the exhaust manifold, right past the first bend. If the image doesn't show up for some reason, just put your information into the site and look for the exhaust piping category. If you're going to replace it yourself, make sure to use some kind of penetration spray like %26quot;Liquid Wrench%26quot; or %26quot;PB Blaster%26quot;, or it's going to be a major pain to get off.
    Your o2 sensor is usually next to you catalytic converter. Under the car close to the engine/between the tires. It should 3 wires and look similar to a spark plug

    I had recently purchased a second hand 00 eclipse. The oxygen sensors were changed, used the fuel injector cleaner, and had the air filter changed. Yet I still get something like 14 gallons per mile out of the car. Is there anything I can look out for? I found out online that on local road it is approx. 20 miles per gallon and 28 on highway. I know these are %26quot;exaggerated%26quot; sometimes, but I still think 14 miles to a gallon is a very bad economy.

    you might have a bad piston ring, it would cause a blowby and reduced power. it too would make is so that you mpg is alot worse. the first thing i would do i check the spark plugs and timing, if neither of those help i would have a good mechanic look at it for a definate answer.
    have the plugs replaced , and probably the intake or exhaust is restricted. pug the computer to it.

    Check engine error code p1382 came out on my 97 Honda Accord. It says it is %26quot;No signal in the Cylinder Position (CYP) sensor circuit.%26quot; I just had my distributor changed last january, do you think i should go back for the warranty and have my mechanic replaced it? The thing is when they checked it they said i need to change the oxygen sensor but when my dad's mechanic checked it, it says different code.     If you have the 2.2 engine, then Yes, take it back to whoever installed the distributor because the CYP sensor is inside of it. If you have the 2.7 engine, the sensor is on the front of the forward Cylinder head.

    The CYP sensor and the Oxygen sensor are NOT related.

    I think o2 sensors bad and misfire?

    hey yall.. about 4 days ago i bought 2 o2 senors.. both bank 2. replaced them both. went to autozone the next day and ran it. said that one of the senors i put in had low voltage but the other was fine. went out the next day and bought a another sensor for bank 1 sensor 1. ( this was also bad)ok.. went to autozone tonight and it said bank 2 sensor 2 was no activity, bank 1 sensor 2 was no activity and there were 2 other ones that said oxygen sensor circuit was no activity. or something like that.. basic story is that i replaced 2 bad 02 sensors in bank 2. had it checked, 1 of the ones i replaced was good. changed another sensor in another bank.. now they are all screwed.. wtf is going on? any help would be awesome. thanks you all. also, the scanner said i had %26quot; random multiple misfires%26quot; is this all the same problem?

    The o2 sencer get the blame for alot of things that goes wrong with the car. remember those sencers are at the end of all the rest. you need to look a little farthere in to all the sencers the ramdom miss fires could be the coil packs if you have them or the dist. if you don't. Some thing is telling the computer the wrong info. and this is what you got to find. the sencer may still work but giving the wrong info like the engine is cold and it really warmed up so you won't get a code for that.
    Fix the multiple missfire code first. Bet it cures all your problems. Just because you have an o2 sensor code don't mean the sensor is bad. Just means it has read rich or lean for too long to suit the computer. the missfire can cause it to read rich because the fuel is not burning in the cylinder and dumping raw fuel in the exhaust. So the 02 sensor reads that as a rich burn and sets the code.

    Well, Rakel is right (like always) but why are you changing the 02 sensor? If it due to an autozone diag, just go throw the money in the street. There are many, many things that can cause a 02 to read wrong, and until it is diagnosed correctly, you might just be wasting $80.00 at a time till you get the correct one replaced, not to mention the skin that will have to grow back.     pretty much agree with the other two except I own a 2 foot long screw driver so I can depress the o2 sensor locks on the connector if it's ones buried in there... most I use a 7/8 inch wrench with no problems to remove

    I been checking my codes with the Auto Zone OBD scanner and I was told that it does not provide the exact codes for my 1999 Ford Explorer. I had oxygen sensors codes show up when I used the Autozone scanner and I've changed the sensors twice. Would anyone know which Check Engine light scanner is best for my 1999 Ford Explorer? Also, I've only found three sensors under my car two near the engine Bank 1 and bank 2. and the other before the Catalyst converter. I was not able to locate the fourth bank 1 oxygen sensor. can someone tell me where its at?

    On a V-6 or V-8 engine youshould only have three O2 sensors. One on each pipe or exhaust manifold coming out of the engine and one after the catalytic convertor.



    Most O2 sensors will outlast an enigne or go 100K-200K miles. There are many things that can give a false reading to make it read an O2 sensor.



    If you do not stay on top of oil changes or tune ups or there is significant oil usage from wear and tear these mechanical and chemical changes (dirty nasty oil) will give false O2 sensor readings.



    Best ot have a full engine diagnostic to get the whole picture before spending anymore money on parts you don't need.

    Usually between the engine and catalytic convertor.
    just beneath the headlights to the right of the do-hickey thingy and kitty korner from the widgity whatsamacallit.
    On any engine the oxygen sensor or sensors are always on the exhaust between the manifold and the cat converter. You have a V6 so you're gonna have two of them. They're easy to spot because they look kinda like a spark plug only with a regular looking wire coming off of it. Dodge Man is right though. Soak them with a penetrant to loosen them.
    It's most likely on one side of the engine exhaust manifolds. It might be covered with a heat shield. Or if not, it probably would then be towards the center of the exhaust system further down from the engine under the car screwed into the exhaust pipe.

    But I would have the engine codes read first to determine what the computer is saying the problem is. Remember that the computer uses the o2 sensor to detect problems, so if the computer indicates that the o2 sensor is detecting a lean or rich condition it's probably another part on the car that would be making the exhaust not meet the requirements of the emission control system. (most auto parts sales people like to sell o2 sensors to people who know nothing about the car because it's easy to convince you that you need one, and for 50 or more dollars it might be worth looking further into the problem)

    First off you will need to find out what the actual codes are that turned on the Check Engine Light. No point in waisting time and money fixing things that you or your friend might think is the problem.



    All Check Engine Lights come on for multiple reasons and you will need to figure out WHY it came on. By having the codes you are narrowing down the location of the problem, so that you can use correct judgment and diagnostics to correct it with lower cost to you.



    Go to your local auto parts store barrow their Code Scanner - now you will get a code or codes that lead you to the direction of the problem BUT may still not be the right solution.



    Once you get the codes and you have an idea where to start your diagnostics , you will still need perhaps tools to do this.



    I for one would do this, since you are not able to correct the problem without tools and/or/ scanner - I would go to the Dealer have them run diagnostics , get the info they give you fix the problem yourself. This way you have correct information on why the light is coming on and they have done all the diagnostics for you. You will pay something for this diagnostics but you can be sure that you will get the problem fixed.

    Don't go guessing %26amp; replacing parts your car may not need. See if there is an auto-zone or pep-boys shop around, usually they will pull the code(s) from your computer for free, with the thought that they can sell you the part right then and there. However do not buy the part just because there is a code stored for it, there may be a wiring issue causing the code. There a probably about 160 different items that can make your check engine light come on, even a loose or missing gas cap will do that. Have the code pulled, go to alldata-diy.com, you can buy a subscription to all the technical data for your vehicle there so that you can acess the manufacuturers test for the specific code and/or a possbile service bulliten issued from the factory relating to your problem. It will also contain the nec. repair info once you determine the cause of failure.I think the subscription will run you about $ 25.00 for the year. Good Luck!
    Before you do anything, take the car out and put the petal to the metal. I mean really floor it getting onto the freeway. Many times an O2 sensor will show bad because of carbon build-up. Most people occasionally put the petal to the metal a few times during the year, but with gas prices being high I have seen a lot more of these because people just don't run the car hard enough or often enough to keep it clean.

    There are two (on 4 cyl) - one before, and one after catalytic converter. You need a special socket to replace it but first I suggest you determine which one is bad by checking the code number.

    Oh, those parts store guys that tell you that an O2 sensor is bad but don't mention that there are more than one. Don't get me started!

    How do you change the bank one oxygen sensor for a 98 dodge grand caravan 3.0L v6 and after clear the codes?

    First you will need a 7/8th inch wrench ( I cannot remember the metric size of them off hand) or an O2 sensor socket and appropriate ratchet.

    Bank one will be the left side of the motor which in your case would be the FRONT bank of the engine as it sits in the vehicle. Usually the O2 sensors are mounted close to/or in the exhaust manifolds, so crawl under the car, and follow the front exhaust pipe from the front exhaust manifold back towards the catalytic converter. You should see it somewhere near where the pipe bolts to the manifold (looks almost like a sparkplug).



    Once located, Unpug the connector, compare the old and new/replacement sensor connector to make sure you bought the right replacement, use the wrench/socket and unscrew (not always easy) the old one. Install the new sensor. It does not need to be cranked in there for oblivion, just a little tighter than %26quot;snug%26quot;, reconnect the connector and route/tie the wires where they wont interfere, hang down, drag or burn on the exhaust.

    Use a scanner to clear the EDC.

    If I have the correct scanner, I usually run the car and observe/verify that the new sensor is working properly before clearing the code and sending it home. If you can't, just clear the code.



    All done



    Sometimes the sensors are hard to loosen. I usually try to do it when the exhaust is still hot, they come out easier. But this also means that I get burned sometimes.

    White smoke is coolant getting burnt. You most likely have a bad head gasket. Check the oil and make sure it is not foamy.

    You don't say what kind of car it is but generally those type of connectors are indexed so that they can't plug into the wrong connector. By indexed I mean there will be grooves inside the mating connector that will have to match the connector they are unplugged from. And also I don't think an oxygen sensor should keep the car from starting if it is unhooked,it will turn the 'check engine' light on quickly but usually it will not keep the car from starting so it might be something else.

    I would go to a local autozone or auto parts store that does the diagnostic free. Do a visual isnspection of those littlle hoses around the top of the engine to see if any are corroded. It may be a bad sensor or hose.

    There are 2 sensors that will make the car use much more gas



    (1) bad o2 sensor

    (2) bad water temp sensor.



    But given you got P0421 it is probably bad o2 sensor.

    Bad o2 sensor will make your car dump fuel into the piston (making it run rich and bad mpg). That extra fuel has to be finished burning in the cat converter (eventually melting it down).

    You need a new o2 sensor asap, not having it function correctly means you are running rich (wasting gas) Just the sensor should do the trick if you havnt been driving around like this for too long. Running rich is basically overloading the cat, causing it to fail early.
    a really rich fuel mixture will ruin a cat. you might wanna find another shop...ask your neighbors where they take they're cars..

    The 2 in the back are easy to find. Get under the truck starting at the muffler follow the exhaust towards the engine. The first one should be behind the cat and the other in front. You better have really good tools to take them out. Min 6 point good quality wrench or rent the proper socket. have fun saving money.

    People like to blame the O2 sensor for the problem because that's where the computer fault appears.

    However, nine times out of ten, it's not faulty. It is simply reading a condition in the engine that is causing it to send a signal to the computer that there is a fault in the exhaust emissions mixture.

    A fouled spark plug, loose spark plug wire, a vacuum leak, dirty injectors, EGR valve, weak fuel pump, dirty fuel filter, weak ignition coil, plugged air filter, on and on, can all cause the O2 sensor to register a fault code.

    i recently replaced the shocks, front brakes, front right ball joint, the serpentine belt, had a tune up and changed the oxygen sensor. I had an alignment and tire balance done and this stopped the rubbing sound for awhile. but it's now back, along with a groaning sound. can anyone help?

    It might just be slack wheel nuts, sometimes the simple thing are missed. Although the shocks were replaced how about the springs? Try jacking up the front and spinning the wheel to check if the brakes are binding, these suggestions might help but keep on trying I have no training in auto repairs but the only time my car goes into a garage is for the annual road safety check which is a government requirement.

    I think this same thing happened to my car when I had to replace the ball joint but I am by no means a professional!!
    Time for a brake recheck. If the steering wheel shakes when you brake, the front brake discs are slightly warped (when the brake pads grab the discs, the whole assembly shimmys back and forth because of the warp - this gets felt as a slight right-left motion in your steering wheel). If this problem existed in the back wheels, you would feel a something like a slow-fast-slow stopping motion. If your front brakes are 'groaning', that's a sign of too much metallic material in the pads and is common in aftermarket pads. You can either wait a while and see if it eventually goes away, complain about the noise to your mechanic, and/or have him put in OEM (original equipment) pads (which cost 2x more).     You cannot splice the wires becuase they have different jobs (each wire has a specific task) and that will destroy your oxygen sensor. Go to a auto dismantler to get one for cheap. or a store.

    It's probably tall enough that you can reach it from under without lifting, depending if it's even accessible. There are more than likely two, one on each manifold (after where the four tubes meet into one larger). Depending on age and whether or not it was anti-seized on the install, it can be a GIANT pain to get them out. Since you're replacing, don't waste money on a special socket that lets you keep the wire intact. My advice is to destroy the outer case of the sensor so you can get a normal socket on the nut portion. Don't try with an open-end wrench, you'll just round the crap out of it. Try initial removal with hot exhaust. No luck? Try it cold (ambient temp). Still not budging? Use a large propane canister and heat the crap out of it, then quickly try to remove. Super-heating the threads helps break the strong bonds they've developed in twenty years of hanging out in the manifold. I had an old fiat that was so bonded it actually tore out the bung instead of loosening at the threads. Anyway, good luck, and use a breaker bar and six point socket.

    I have a 1999 chevy cavalier with a bad oxygen sensor. How hard is it to change and which one do i get.......
    For one how do you know its bad? Have you run a systems Diagnostic ? you seen the wave form being bad under certain test procedures? Dont just assume its bad because the light is on.



    You will need to get the correct O2 sensor per your vehicle, YES they do make a variety of installable sensors but get the right one for your vehicle and for the most part since your car is a 99 its OBD II governed and you will need the 4 wire Sensor, YES you can do it yourself but that vehicle has i think 2 sensors - hence you will need to figure out which one is bad IF it even is bad.



    Best advise i can give you at this time without knowing what is going on with your vehicle.

    you need an o2 socket it looks like a regular socket with one side cut out and you change it just like a spark plug. go to an auto parts store tell them what car you have and Eng and they will give you the right part.
    first off...how do you know it's the oxygen sensor? If it is...then get the VIN # and go to the parts store and they can get you the right one.



    One thing I have done is remove the old one and clean it with carb cleaner...this does work.
    Get a diagonstic tester, plug it up underneath the dash of your car, it will tell you which O2 sensor is bad. The front one or the back one. Get sensor by-( Wells Co. Products) at Auto Zone.They will tell you which one you need. My husbands works there.
    get the code from your computer..that will tell you which one...there should be one right in the front of the engine..



    to the ATS light..is it just the ats light..or is the dash lighting up..these lights coming on are early signs of a wheel bearing problem on a GM..If the ABS light it could cause you a problem in a dangerous situation since that means the ABS is not working and the brakes will lock up..so yes it is important to look into!!!!!
    this car has two o2 sensors, really not that hard to replace. one is located before the cat converter and one behind the converter. should be able to get at both with a 7/8ths wrench. you may need to cut the wires on the old sensors and use the box end of the wrench.
    Oxygen sensors look like spark plugs and screw into the exhaust manifold and/or exhaust headpipe.They should be changed at least every 60,000 miles.They carbon up and go %26quot;blind%26quot; (failing to sense oxygen levels in the exhaust) over time.This will cause poor air/fuel ratios and poor performance as well as hurting gas mileage and possibly even overheating the catalytic converter.The old 1-wire GM sensors run around $30,but multi wire Heated sensors can cost up to $200.I would stick with a name brand like AC Delco,Denso,or Bosch and also buy one of those sensor sockets that look like a regular socket with a slice down the side (for the wires to exit),they are pretty cheap especially if you can find one in the %26quot;Performance Tool%26quot; brand (aka Chinese made).
    some of these are NOT cheap when you get into 4 or 6 wire configs they can be expensive. also do not spray cleaners on it it will ruin it if it is not the bad one.

    I did the gas cap n fuel steps, I scanned it n changed an oxygen sensor, the light remains on and the scanner reads it is off, and does not have enough data available. The battery was also disconnected originally to reset the light. The car is running rough

    I cannot find a comprehensive list right now. Thought I knew right where it was

    Muffler, gas cap evaporation system, coolant temp, oil temp, pressure in the fuel injectors, lots of stuff.

    If you go to a place where they have the electronic diagnostic machines, they can tell you the message and exactly what is causing the light to come on.

    Running rough? Bet it's fuel injectors.

    take it to a gmc dealer or auto part store to hooked up to the computer find out what wrong
    Have you had the engine computer code read? Most National Auto Parts stores will have the hand held computer thingie that hooks into your on-board computer, to tell you what error code comes up. Then they can cross referance the code, and that will help you get started getting some answers. Around here, Advanced Auto Parts, AutoZone, NAPA, employees will check your on-board computer for error code.
    The %26quot;Service Engine Soon%26quot; light is ONLY A REMINDER that a recommended routine maintenance is needed. When you get your engine serviced, ask the mechanic to reset the light for you.



    The %26quot;Check Engine Soon%26quot; light means THERE IS A PROBLEM with either engine performance and/or emission controls and should be repaired ASAP
    the light will stay on until it is reset by an authorized technician

    I started to drive and it seemed like my trans slipped, it vibrated and jumped a little bit, it cleared off but then as soon as i hit my brakes the car died.     Believe it or not, the check engine light means the computer has detected a fault. Since the car has OBDII, the codes will tell you what's wrong., so get the codes read.

    Well first check your oil cause it might be your engine locking up and if you are the type of person who runs your car on fumes before you fill back up you should stop because that is incredibly hard on the engine and transmission. other then that you would be best off having a mechanic check it out real fast.
    Have the code read and save yourself some grief. If I had to guess, your power brake booster is leaking, causing a vacuum leak (too much air) at the engine. The power brakes are run by engine vacuum, and if the booster is leaking it causes the engine to suck in way too much air and confuses the system. Just a possibility.
