Will a bad o2 sensor make you fail a smog check and cause the engine light to come on periodically?

I have failed this last smog test and have verified that my egr valve is fine. The check engine light comes on sporadically and when it does the engine runs a little rough, especially when it is just idling. Wondering if I should change the oxygen sensor, and hoping that there is only one.

Yes. I'm guessing that you own a 2000-1 Maxima because they have been plagued by those problems. My maxima has had all three oxygen sensors replaced and a mass air flow sensor as well. You can replace them yourself, but you have to take your car to a nissan dealership to get them to reprogram your ecu to be compatible with the new sensors. That will cost you around $75.

yes
probably not O2 sensor.

more likely mass air flow meter.

Mass air flow sensor/meter. You can get a cleaner at your local parts store. I would change the air filter also.
