What are the major signs an oxygen sensor is defective?

I previously asked a question about the signs of a fuel pump going when my mechanic told me to change it,(i had my check engine light on) the answer was very informative. I later took the car to an auto zone shop for code reading, they said the O2 sensors are defective, but not specific which ones, the car hesitates while accelerating and uses a lot of gas than normal (98 camry, V6 engine), would changing the O2 sensors solve the problem?
What are the major signs an oxygen sensor is defective?
the 02 sensors are usually found as part of or near the throttle body (or butterfly). if it is defective you will get no reading either way.

its worth a shot, they're cheap
The obvious sign is the Check Engine light is ON. Have the codes read again. There may be an issue with another sensor or there may be another O2 sensor (vehicle may be equipped with more than one)

some signs of your 02 sensor is bad are getting worse fuel mileage, kind of a rough idle. I work in the automotive field and Usually from what ive seen so far, the 02 sensor is on the exhaust manifold and/or before or after the catalytic converter. They are not that expensive to replace either. From what ive read this is likely your problem. Hope this helps.
the most noticeable signs of a bad O2 sensor are:

-poor gas mileage

-rough riding
..Oxygen sensors are found just past of your exhaust manifold!!..the sense oxygen content in your exhaust and adjust your cars computer to your cars fuel needs.

my car and trucks %26quot;Engine service%26quot; lights

come on when they need replacement, and usually my idle gets bad as a sign
First you need to understand that a O2 sensor is a device that is used for fuel management. The computer sees it as a voltage that constantly wanders back and forth between .45 volts Below .45 is interpreted as rich and above is lean. When the sensor is working correctly, it switches back and forth 20 to 30 times per minute some faster and some slower according to the application. The more active the sensor, the better it is managing the fuel. There are up stream and down stream sensors, some with one wire and some with as many as 5 wires. A scanner with live data will allow you to see the voltage switching and if it is lazy you will see that too. The sensor can be fooled by vacuum leaks and scavenge air from bad gaskets in the exhaust system so have this evaluated by a qualified technician. Major sign, would be no voltage change, just stuck at .45 volts or very little change in voltage.
it will be hard on gas, you should see black smoke coming out and it wont run worth a penny.
