if the one you have now is not working then the check engine light will come on. You really only need to change it when it goes bad hence the check light. Once that happens take it to auto zone and barrow a OBD reader or code reader and plug it into your car or if you don't know how have them do it. start the car after its plug in and turned on and it will tell you whats wrong with the car. Never take it to a shop to find out whats wrong with the car when you can find out for free.

Personally I like to replace oxygen or o2 sensors before they go bad or light comes on . Plus on your aged vehicle the o2 sensor is getting close to being 10 yrs old now so it might not be a bad idea at all to replace it.Just bec the check engine light isn't coming on doesn't mean the o2 sensor is working at it's peak performances.

I'd change any old vehicles o2 sensor if it's around 10yrs old or getting close to the 150,00 marking bec o2 sensors may work but be causing the catalytic converter to be forced to run hotter then normal and o2 sensors are the main cause of the catalytic converters to go.

Best of luck and I hope this helps......oh by the way once you change it , replace it for sure every 3 to 5 yrs or every 35,000 to 50,000 miles.
you ever hear the saying %26quot;don't fix something that's not broken%26quot;...use the money for something you need..
