How do I change the oxygen sensor on 2005 Mercury Sable and where is it located?

A word of advice not mentioned yet...make sure your car is cool. Very few things hurt worse than the instant pain of sticking your hand on the HOT Exhaust Manifold or Catalytic Converter.

Be aware that an o2 sensor isn't the only thing that can make the computer bring up an error stemming from the o2 sensors.

You go buy one. Then look under the hood for a gizo that looks identical. Replace it with the new one.

No joke.

changing an o2 sensor is very easy it is on the exhaust manifold it will have on wire running to it that will just unplug then it unscrews screw the new one it plug the wire in and you are done.
you need an especial socket for the oxygen sensor to remove it from your exhaust

if your car is V6 maybe it uses two sensors but they are always at your exhaust

get the socket and wrench and search in the exhaust manifold you will find it easy
Being as this is an OBD2 vehicle you will have more than one O2 sensor on the car. Most V6 engines have 4 sensors on them now. Usually one in each manifold, one before and after the catalytic convertor. The trick is which one is tripping the code and unless you hook up to scan tool you could wind up replacing them all before you get the bad one. Changing them can be a little difficult since the tend to get frozen in the threads but if you buy an oxygen sensor socket and a big enough breaker bar they can be changed by yourself.
